The vehicle was developed on the basis of the Kanonenjagdpanzer 4-5 tank destroyer by the Henschel company in 1964. The tank was planned to replace the obsolete M41 Walker Bulldog vehicles used by the reconnaissance battalions of the armored divisions in the German Army. The tank never saw mass production, but some technical innovations were applied later in the development of other vehicles. The total number of prototypes built is unknown.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Best top speed in the game.
  • Will reach the top speed in a straight line, and will exceed it on downhills.
  • Small profile = great camo value + less chances of getting hit.
  • HE has 100 mm of pen for great damage.
  • Light tank camo while moving.

Cons:

  • No armor whatsoever.
  • Not great gun depression over the front.
  • While pulling sharp turns at high speed, it tends to skid and lose momentum.

Performance

The Spähpanzer Ru 251 is a great tier 8 if you follow the outlined playstyle. You rush to the battle the first and spot the enemy tanks. Preferably you make sure you have support to follow. You preposition your tank to get the flanks of enemies. When enemy defenses are softened, you pounce and use great HE penetration to make enemy tanks very, very sad. If the battle is not going well, you use your teammates are barriers to distract the enemy and farm ridiculous amounts of damage from the sidelines. At the end stages of the battle, you use the mobility to get around enemies and solo flank them one versus one.

Early Research

Starting off the tank you already have the top gun and top turret unlocked, as they are the only modules for that type for the vehicle. Your primary efforts should be focused on the engines, as the stock engine, the MB 837 Aa is quite weak for the weight. After researching both engines, research the upgraded tracks. However, if you have played the Leopard PT A, you will have the top engine unlocked.

Spähpanzer Ru 251 ---> MB 837 Ea 600 --> MTU MB 837 A ---> Spähpanzer Ru 251 PT II ---> Leopard PT A.

Historical Info

The Spähpanzer Kette was designed to replace the Germany Army’s old American M41 light tanks in the reconnaissance role. Its development began in 1960 and a prototype was completed in 1963. It mounted a Rheinmetall turret armed with the 90mm Bordkanone as used in the Jagdpanzer Kanone. By the middle of the 1960s the Leopard tank was in production and it was decided that reconnaissance units did not need their own specialist vehicles. The development of the Spähpanzer Kette was dropped without any further vehicles being built and its role was given over to the Leopard. With hindsight, this may have been a hasty move as the wheeled Spähpanzer Luchs was eventually developed to take back this role from the Leopard.
