The German heavy cruiser ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE. The ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE was built by the Wilhelmshaven Naval Dockyard, being laid down on 1 October 1932, launched on 30 June 1934 and commissioned on 6 January 1936. In her short commerce raiding career she sank 50,089 tons of shipping before being engaged by British cruisers in what has become known as the Battle of the River Plate (13 December 1939). After putting into Montevideo harbour for repairs, the GRAF SPEE was scuttled in the River Plate estuary on 17 December 1939, after successful British intelligence work had convinced her captain that a much superior British naval force was awaiting her departure from Uruguayan waters.
