Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

FCM 36 Pak 40

III

AnnoF27_FCM_36Pak40.png

850

The FCM 36 Pak 40 is a French tier 3 premium tank destroyer.

In 1943, ten FCM 36 tanks captured by the Germans were converted into tank destroyers. The vehicles fought in France with the Verstärkte Schnelle Brigade West.

With a thinly armored, open-top superstructure and weak engine, the FCM 36 Pak 40 has a hard time defending itself when caught in the open and needs to be thoroughly concealed. When at a safe distance however, the FCM's powerful 75mm cannon and extremely high 400m view range enable it to do a great amount of damage in very little time.

This tank was removed from sale in the gift shop and to buy for gold via the in game tech tree on the 4/5/15 with the release of 9.7 Premium Tanks: Removal from Sales as part of the WG retirement plan.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Insane view range, better than even some tier 10 tanks, means you can scout without even being near the front line!
  • Powerful gun with short reload time
  • Good accuracy, aim time and gun depression
  • Good penetration

Cons:

  • Weak engine, very poor acceleration and top speed; difficulty knocking down trees and walls
  • Thin superstructure armor
  • Narrow gun arc
  • Low ammo capacity

Performance

The FCM 36 Pak 40, armed with its namesake Pak 40 gun, is a textbook sniper. The 75mm gun has enough penetration to damage even tier V heavy tanks and also has very good alpha damage for a tier III gun. The gun's relatively short reload time of roughly 3.6 seconds means that the FCM also has a higher DPM than most tier III tank destroyers. Its 400m view range enables it to stay invisible by positioning itself far outside the view range of most enemy tanks, even those two tiers higher than the FCM. When left alone in a good vantage point, an FCM is capable of doing devastating amounts of damage in a short amount of time.

Though it may be a highly efficient sniper, the FCM almost completely dependent upon distance, concealment, and allied support to keep it safe. With a 91hp engine, the FCM is extremely slow moving and can't relocate quickly. The FCM can't count on its armor to defend it either (the armor ratings given in-game are for the FCM's lower hull, and don't apply to the very large and much more poorly armored superstructure on top of the tank). FCM drivers need also be cautious of being spotted even beyond the range of enemy tank guns, as it is a prime target for artillery.

Compared to Similar Tanks

Armed with the same 75mm Pak 40 cannon as the Marder II, the FCM is often compared to it. Despite the fact that two tanks share the same gun, the Marder's gun, oddly, has better penetration values. The Marder also has a much wider traverse range, but gets this at a great cost to its accuracy and aim time. Thus, the FCM is far better at aiming and hitting long-range shots. Though both tanks are poorly armored and relatively slow, the Marder is often significantly less capable due to its lower accuracy, aim time, rate of fire, and view range, but maintains higher mobility than the FCM.

Historical Info

FCM 36 Pak 40 was one of the vehicles from the Marder I family
The FCM 36 or Char léger Modèle 1936 FCM, was a light infantry tank that was designed for the French Army prior to World War II. It had a crew of two and was equipped with a short 37 mm main armament and a 7.5 mm coaxial machine gun. Power was provided by a diesel engine. The Germans captured 37 FCM 36s, using the administrative designation Panzerkampfwagen 737 FCM (f) for them. In 1943, ten of the captured FCMs were rebuilt as Marder I tank destroyers, which were employed by the 21st Panzer Division in the Battle of Normandy in 1944. Besides FCM 36, the Germans also used other captured French vehicles for the Marder I conversion; Lorraine 37L (170 produced), Hotckiss H35 (unknown number produced) and Hotckiss H39 (24 produced).

Historical Accuracy Errata

The following are consensus errors or inconsistencies which have been identified with the configuration of the vehicle in question and conflict with information available on the public record. The causes for these divergences in the game are normally not disclosed and may be rooted in game balance.

Although a German conversion, this tank was instead introduced to the game for the French tech tree. The markings are French roundels instead of the German Balkenkreuz.
  • Actual name is 7.5cm PaK40(Sf) auf Geschützwagen FCM(f).
