Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

The Spähpanzer Ru 251 is a German tier 9 light tank.

The vehicle was based on the Kanonenjagdpanzer 4-5 tank destroyer by the Henschel company in 1964. The tank was planned to replace the obsolete M41 Walker Bulldog vehicles used by the reconnaissance battalions of the armored divisions in the German Army. The tank never saw mass production, but some technical innovations were applied later in the development of other vehicles. The total number of prototypes built is unknown.

The second true scout in the German line, (the first being the Luchs) the Ru 251 has the best mobility of all tier 9 scouts. Unfortunately, in patch 9.18, its maximum speed was decreased to 70 KM/H, but it's still quite fast. The gun is another strength of the tank, combining high pen, good accuracy on the move, and high DPM. The biggest con of the tank would be its large size and lack of armor, making bounces extremely rare. As a true scout, it can both passive and active spot very well with a great base view range of 410 m. You will want practice in lower tier lights before playing this though, as most guns you will be facing have the accuracy to hit you when going full speed.

The Spähpanzer Ru 251 leads to the Rheinmetall Panzerwagen.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Even though it was nerfed in patch 9.18, its speed is still excellent for tier 9 lights at 70 KM/H.
  • Very high damage per minute; more so when loading HE for lightly armoured targets.
  • Low aim time and good dispersion values.
  • Highest penetration with APCR and HE among all tier 9 light tanks.
  • Extremely high HE pen at 102 mm.

Cons:

  • Very thin armor; any gun with a caliber of over 76 mm will triple overmatch your armor (a guaranteed penetration).
  • Larger profile than most other lights.
  • Gun depression only reaches its full -10 degrees when aiming to the sides.
  • Not a lot of shells carried for its rate of fire.
  • Different crew size than other lights in it's tech line (has dedicated loader).

Performance

More or less a lighter version of Leopard Prototyp A that is designed for recon, keep moving with your amazing speed and maneuver when you can, but make sure not to turn around too much as this will slow you down a lot. Avoid crashing into other tanks when at high speed as you'll lose a lot of health due to your light weight and thin armor. Use your DPM and fire APCR or HEAT at enemies whenever you're not scouting. If you're spotted, never stand still, as any shot that hits you will penetrate, or at best HE not penetrate for full damage. Play it like a standard issue light tank with few - if any - downsides, but remember that it offers a lot more mobility and gun depression than most other lights, especially at this tier.

This tank has both the top gun and turret right out the box, making this an easier grind than most tanks.

Early Research

Tracks first, then the engines, last the radio.

Historical Info

The Spähpanzer Kette was designed to replace the Germany Army’s old American M41 light tanks in the reconnaissance role. Its development began in 1960 and a prototype was completed in 1963. It mounted a Rheinmetall turret armed with the 90mm Bordkanone as used in the Jagdpanzer Kanone.

By the middle of the 1960s the Leopard tank was in production and it was decided that reconnaissance units did not need their own specialist vehicles. The development of the Spähpanzer Kette was dropped without any further vehicles being built and its role was given over to the Leopard. With hindsight, this may have been a hasty move as the wheeled Spähpanzer Luchs was eventually developed to take back this role from the Leopard.

The materials concerning this tank are actually still considered confidential by the Bundeswehr.
