Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

Marder 38T

IV

AnnoG39_Marder_III.png

125000

The Marder 38T is a German tier 4 tank destroyer.

Developed on the basis of the Pz.Kpfw. 38 (t) tank. Either a Pak 40 or Pak 36(r) gun was mounted in a cabin with an open top and back. The vehicle entered service at the end of 1942. This tank destroyer was mass-produced until the middle of 1944 and was used until the end of the war.

The Marder 38T marks the end of its German tank destroyer line.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

- Fast rate of fire and good alpha

- Wide gun traverse arc

- Fast aim time (nerfed to 1.7 instead of 1.5 as of Update 1.9)

- Decent penetration

- Awesome gun depression

Cons:

- Paper thin armor, can be easily one shot by howitzers (415 HP as of 1.9)

- Low gun elevation

- Can only carry 38 Rounds, 55 (or 65, see below) as of 1.9

Performance

The Marder 38T is everything that the Marder II used to be: good aiming time, accuracy, penetration, and rate of fire. Along with good maneuverability, this tank destroyer is an absolute keeper. All this comes at the cost of the vehicle being at Tier IV which will see up to Tier VI battles.

The Marder 38T is an extremely fun tank to play, having high DPM, fast aim time, good accuracy, and acceptable penetration. With a 75% crew and the top gun your reload time is only ~3.29 seconds (nerfed to 4.11 as of Update 1.9). This tank is best played as a sniper, laying on the DPM from afar. Because of its high fire rate and decent penetration (The penetration is nearly equal to the top gun on the Pz.Kpfw. III/IV) it remains effective even in Tier VI matches. Although its frontal armor is rated at 50mm (only 10mm less than the infamous Hetzer) it has little effectiveness, as it has little sloping and the gun shield is large and thin. To compare this tank's gun to the M3 Lee's (which also has high DPM) would show that it has better accuracy, aim time, and much better penetration. Although at first glance the third gun looks nearly identical to the second one, it has better accuracy, aim time, and RoF. The main tanks you want to watch out for are the British AT series and any tanks with "derp" guns, i.e. the Hetzer, M4 Sherman, and the Tier III and IV British TD's. The mobility of this tank is average but it can go surprisingly fast downhill.

The Marder's crew setup of Commander (Gunner), Driver, Radio Operator, Loader matches only the Panzer Selbsfahrlafette IC -- your 38T crew can be used there without penalty. In a pinch the Dicker Max, Ferdinand FL, Jagdtiger 8.8cm, Jagdtiger FL, and Jagdtiger Prototype can also accommodate your 38T crew but (a) your Commander's gunner skills won't be used, and (b) you'll have to supply additional crew members such as gunners and loaders.

To wrap up, this tank has spectacular DPM (average/decent as of 1.9), good accuracy, decent penetration, good mobility, and bad armor.

Early Research

- The 7.5cm Pak 40/2 L/46 and FuG 8 carry over from the Marder II, if you have them then mount them immediately

(Normally you'd want to rush straight to the top gun right away -- and the suspension allows this -- but the above gun is almost as good as the top gun, it uses the exact same ammunition (nothing wasted when you upgrade), and you can carry 10 more shells. Essentially you have to ask yourself if the top gun is worth not being able to mount all the equipment you want.)

- You have to research the suspension to mount any new modules, and this allows all available equipment to be used as well

- Research the engines, they aren't too expensive and provide a nice mobility boost

- Now research the top gun, it is the same as the 7.5cm Pak 40/2 L/46 but with more accuracy, faster aim time, and higher rate of fire

- As a Collector's Vehicle there are no tanks that branch on from this (formerly the Pz.Sfl. IVc) so the 38T is now elite; don't forget to turn on Accelerate Crew Training

Suggested Equipment

Binocular Telescope Enhanced Gun Laying Drive Camouflage Net Low Noise Exhaust System

Documented Tank and Crew Builds

The Net and Telescope are a given for this tank -- the Net especially, given the 38T's wide gun traverse -- however it's personal preference between the Gun Laying Drive or Low Noise Exhaust; one allows you to aim quicker, the other gives greater stealth. (A shame it won't take Improved Ventilation.) It all depends on what you prefer to improve.

Historical Accuracy Errata

The following are consensus errors or inconsistencies which have been identified with the configuration of the vehicle in question and conflict with information available on the public record. The causes for these divergences in the game are normally not disclosed and may be rooted in game balance.

The tank is actually known as the Marder III Ausf. H. It was never called "Marder 38T".

- The 7,62 cm Pak 36 (r) gun was actually used on a different Marder III variant, the Sd.Kfz. 139. This vehicle does not exist in the game. Its configuration on the Ausf. H is fake

- The Ausf. M suspension actually refers to a different Marder III variant with the fighting compartment in the rear, similar to the Grille. The tank's current model is an Ausf. H. The Marder III Ausf. M also does not exist in World of Tanks

- Uses the same Pak 40 gun as the FCM 36 Pak 40 (which is actually a Marder I), yet their penetration values are inconsistent and the shells are incompatible with each other
