Description
In the spring of 1940, the French battle plan was cut to pieces by the German army, and the vast bulk of France and Britain's armed forces were trapped in Belgium. After fighting their way out proved futile, the armies were forced into an ever smaller pocket that centered, eventually, on the French port at Dunkirk. The entire Allied armed forces seemed doomed to destruction--unless Britain could somehow come up with a way to evacuate 400,000 men by sea in a fortnight...
Dunkirk encompasses the English Channel between Dunkirk and Dover. The south shore, France, is largely occupied by the German army, who have a number of large field guns in place to ward off the Royal Navy from their impending destruction of the trapped army. Between Britain and France sits an enormous minefield, laid by the British to deter German ships but now impeding their own evacuation efforts.
