Description

In the spring of 1940, the French battle plan was cut to pieces by the German army, and the vast bulk of France and Britain's armed forces were trapped in Belgium. After fighting their way out proved futile, the armies were forced into an ever smaller pocket that centered, eventually, on the French port at Dunkirk. The entire Allied armed forces seemed doomed to destruction--unless Britain could somehow come up with a way to evacuate 400,000 men by sea in a fortnight...

Dunkirk encompasses the English Channel between Dunkirk and Dover. The south shore, France, is largely occupied by the German army, who have a number of large field guns in place to ward off the Royal Navy from their impending destruction of the trapped army. Between Britain and France sits an enormous minefield, laid by the British to deter German ships but now impeding their own evacuation efforts. With the massacre of the Allied air forces early in the Battle of France, the skies belong to the Luftwaffe, and while Germany's large ships are kept at bay by the threat of the Home Fleet, the waters teem with Schnellboots armed with deadly torpedoes.

Historical inaccuracies

  • No Soviet warships were involved in the actual evacuation of Dunkirk as the USSR was still in a treaty of non-agression with with Nazi Germany, and very few Soviet warships could actually transit the large amount of water in between the USSR ports in Murmansk and on the Black Sea to the Alantic Ocean. They would've came into conflict with Polish warships like Blyskawica, whose country at the time was under joint Nazi and Soviet occupation.
  • No American warships were involved in the evacuation either as the United States was still neutral in the war.
