Created by the Hawker company based on the experience gained from the development of the Hurricane. A total of 6 prototypes were built and tested in 1939–1941. However, due to engine problems, the project was abandoned in favor of the Hawker Typhoon.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:


  • Powerful complement of weapons from the Hurricane II
  • Acceptable maneuverability
  • Good speed with the top engine


Cons:


  • No carry over engines from the Hurricane II
  • Sluggish at stock, a tough grind for the top engine
  • Barely improved optimum altitude at 1200m


Performance

The Hawker Tornado refines the playstyle of the Hurricane II at a tier higher. It is tough, reliable in most situations (other than tight dogfights), and packs a nasty punch. The 20mm Hispano autocannons and the wing-mounted rockets carry over from its predecessor, giving you the same firepower as before. Unfortunately the Tornado is relegated to 1200m optimum altitude, barely an improvement and a liability when trying to bring down high level bombers or heavy fighters. With that said, every plane within reach from fighters to attack planes, and fellow multiroles have much to fear from your autocannons. Use your speed to chase down targets or escape pursuit, and punish planes who fail to do the same.


Historical Info

The Hawker Tornado was a British single-seat fighter aircraft design of World War II for the Royal Air Force as a replacement for the Hawker Hurricane. The planned production of Tornados was cancelled after the engine it was designed to use, the Rolls-Royce Vulture, proved unreliable in service. A parallel airframe with the Napier Sabre continued into production as the Hawker Typhoon.
