?''Émile Bertin'' is a Tier V French light cruiser. Similar to most other light cruisers, she is equipped with 152mm guns. Her armor however is extremely thin, having only 13mm to protect her vital areas. Because of this light armor, the ship will sustain massive damage from enemy battleships and heavy cruisers. Rather than relying on armor for protection, ''Émile Bertin'' uses speed and range to avoid shells. With a top speed of 35 knots, a range of nearly 15km, and good turning characteristics, ''Émile Bertin'' can easily dodge incoming fire from enemy warships. Additionally, the main battery guns have a very sluggish reload time, further limiting the ship’s abilities in close quarters engagements.  ====Design==== ====Design====
?''Émile Bertin'' was a French fast light cruiser named after Louis-Émile Bertin, a 19th-century naval architect. She was designed to operate both as a minelayer and as a destroyer flotilla leader. The design was the basis for later light and heavy French cruisers, particularly the slightly larger ''[[La Galissonnière]]'' class of cruisers. This was the first French warship to use triple mountings.+Authorized at the same time as ''[[Algérie]]'', ''Émile Bertin'' was initially planned as an improved ''Pluton''. Initial designs envisioned ''Émile Bertin'' as a minelayer, but later designs emphasized on the ship’s cruiser qualities. The final design featured nine 152mm guns mounted in three triple turrets, a first for the French Navy. The cruiser’s light secondary armament was placed on the aft superstructure and her few anti-aircraft guns were mounted on the forecastle. ''Émile Bertin'' was built with very light armor which allowed the cruiser to reach speeds of up to 39 knots. However, her lightly built hull prevented her from salvo firing.
 +
+''Émile Bertin'' underwent several refits during her time in service. Her hull was strengthened shortly after she entered service in 1935 to better stabilize the ship when firing the main guns. ''Émile Bertin'' also underwent refits in the USA in late 1943. During this time, the aircraft catapult was removed and her anti-aircraft armament was strengthened. A radar mount was also constructed onto the foremast.
 +
 +====Service====
+''Émile Bertin'' was commissioned into the French Navy on 28 January 1935 and became the Flagship of the Atlantic Squadron of Contre-Torpilleur divisions. In 1939, the ship was stationed in the Mediterranean Sea. When World War II broke out, ''Émile Bertin'' carried the gold reserves of the Bank of Poland, about 57 tons of gold, to Toulon. In January 1940, ''Émile Bertin'' conducted several surveillance operations near the Canary Islands before returning to Brest, France for repairs. In April, under the command of Admiral Derrien, ''Émile Bertin'' and several destroyers supported Allied operations in Norway. ''Émile Bertin'' was attacked and damaged by German aircraft during these operations and again returned to Brest for repairs. With her repairs complete, the cruiser sailed for Nova Scotia twice, transporting gold from the Bank of France. Upon her second arrival in Nova Scotia, ''Émile Bertin'' was ordered to not unload her cargo and instead return to France for further orders. The ship arrived in Fort de France, unloaded her cargo, and prepared to defend the island from an expected British attack. The cruiser remained off the coast of Fort de France until 16 May 1942, when Vichy forces immobilized the ship. In August 1943, ''Émile Bertin'' sailed to Philadelphia to undergo modernizations. Having rejoined the Allied cause, ''Émile Bertin'' sailed to Dakar in December 1943 and spent much of 1944 supporting the landing operations in south France. In December 1944, ''Émile Bertin'' again underwent several refits which lasted until October the following year. In late 1945, the ship sailed for Indo-China where she remained until 2 July 1946. Upon returning to France, ''Émile Bertin'' served as a gunnery training ship until she was scrapped in October 1959.
 +
 +===Historical Inaccuracies===
+* The twin 40mm Bofors on Hull (B) is fictitious. The placement of the guns on turret roofs, particularly "B" turret, obstructs the view of the conning tower as well as the player's vision when in first-person view.
+* Measure 22 camouflage is missing (Navy Blue hull and Haze Gray upperworks with Deck Blue for horizontal surfaces). ''Émile Bertin'' received this paint scheme while under refit at Norfolk Navy Yard in late 1943.
+* Final anti-aircraft configuration consisted of four quad 40mm Bofors, 20 single 20mm Oerlikons and two twin 90mm dual-purpose guns. Both triple torpedo tubes, seaplanes and the aircraft catapult were removed.

Player Opinion

Performance

Émile Bertin is the Tier V French light cruiser. Less a typical light cruiser and more of a "super destroyer", Émile Bertin sports heavy firepower and incredible speed, but almost no armor. Because of this, close-in slugging matches with enemy battleships and heavy cruisers are to be avoided at all costs. Additionally, the main battery guns have a very sluggish reload time, further limiting the ship’s abilities in close quarters engagements.

Rather than relying on armor for protection, Émile Bertin captains must use her speed and range to avoid incoming shells. With a blistering top speed of 39 knots, a range of nearly 15km, triple-mounted turrets with decent dispersion, and good turning characteristics, Émile Bertin can easily dodge incoming fire and pick the range at which it chooses to pepper the enemy. Émile Bertin’s armor piercing shells work great against enemy cruisers and other broadside targets, and a full HE salvo will crush most destroyers in 2-3 volleys.

Émile Bertin is also equipped with a triple torpedo launcher per side. The firing angles of these launchers almost rival those of Katori’s, meaning that the ship does not need to turn much to be able to fire. The torpedoes are also quite fast and long-ranged for their tier, making them useful against enemy warships who get too close, or for area denial.

Pros:

  • AB-X turret layout allows two-thirds of its firepower to be deployed even when bow-on.
  • The fastest Tier V cruiser with a top speed of 39 knots.
  • Quick rudder shift time and a decent turning radius allow her to easily dodge incoming fire.
  • The main turrets traverse quickly meaning that her guns will remain on target even during hard turns.
  • Excellent torpedoes with 60 knots speed and 9 km range, with generous firing angles.

Cons:

  • The ship is virtually unarmored. Her main belt reaches a maximum thickness of only 13mm.
  • Reload time remains mediocre at 12 seconds.
  • Only one torpedo launcher on each side; half as many as the preceding ship in the line, Duguay-Trouin.
  • Anti-aircraft capabilities of the ship are very limited.

Research

Émile Bertin has only two purchasable modules: the hull and gun fire control system. Researching the second hull is recommended before researching the gun fire control system as it will grant the ship additional hit points as well an upgraded anti-aircraft armament. The gun fire control system offers an increase in range from 13.6km to 14.9km.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

Émile Bertin has access to three upgrade slots.

Commander Skills

For tier 1 skills, there are several options worth training a commander with. Skills such as Priority Target and Incoming Fire Alert may help notifying a player when they are in danger of taking damage from incoming shells. Preventative Maintenance may also be useful for lowering the risk of modules becoming incapacitated.

For tier 2 skills, Expert Marksman has limited usefulness due to Émile Bertin’s already quick turret traverse time. Instead, Adrenaline Rush is recommended to help reduce the reload speed of the main turrets when the ship takes damage. Jack of All Trades may also be useful to reduce the reload time of consumables.

For tier 3 skills, Demo Expert is recommended to increase the fire chance of the main armament guns. Superintendent may be of use in granting the player an additional consumable of every type. Lastly, Torpedo Armament Expertise is recommended to reduce the amount of time between torpedo salvoes.

For tier 4 skills, Concealment Expert and Inertia Fuse for HE Shells are recommended. Concealment Expert provides a bonus to the detection range of the ship. Inertia Fuse for HE Shells will boost the penetration of the ship's HE shells at a cost of fire chance. This will allow the HE shells to damage some areas of Tier VII battleships that they would normally not be able to do. Advanced Firing Training may also be of use to increase range of the ship's anti-aircraft guns.

Consumables

Émile Bertin has access to the following consumables:

Mounting the premium version of the Damage Control Party consumable is recommended to reduce the time between each repair.

Camouflage

Émile Bertin does not have access to a premium camouflage purchasable with doubloons. Instead, it is recommended to mount Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage for increased survivability. Other economic camouflage such as the Ocean Soul camouflage may also be used to speed up the process of obtaining the next ship.

Signals

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
