A King George V-class battleship that carried 356 mm main guns, and could run at quite a high speed for a ship of her type. Numerous dual-purpose artillery served as a basis for the ship's AA defenses. A very successful gun fire control system provided for high accuracy of fire of the ship's main battery.

Player Opinion

Performance

HMS Duke of York is the third Tier VII premium British battleship in World of Warships, coming in alongside the previously released HMS Hood and HMS Nelson. Unlike the other two — which are quite unique — Duke of York is literally the sister ship of the regular tech tree Tier VII battleship, King George V. Many of Duke of York’s statistics are similar, if not identical, to that of her sister; as such, her play style is also very similar.

Duke of York is armed with ten 356 mm guns in a unique setup; two quad turrets, one for and one aft, and a single dual turret in a forward super firing position. This gives her unrivaled firepower to the front and rear of her ship in comparison to all other Tier VII battleships. This good forward and backwards firepower comes at the cost of atrocious turret angles, requiring her to show almost a complete, flat broadside to her enemies to fire all ten rifles at a target. Her guns themselves are nearly identical to that of her sister, with the exception of a longer reload. Like all British battleships, her guns have lackluster AP in exchange for phenomenal HE shell characteristics, including the ¼ HE penetration rule, allowing her to do massive damage and light fires to all targets with HE.

Duke of York features an identical armor scheme to that of her sister; 25mm plating around the entire ship, and a hefty main belt with a maximum thickness of 381mm. Her belt armor is very capable of bouncing large caliber shells when properly angled, while her 25mm plating makes her extremely susceptible to HE shells from enemy cruisers, even without the use of the Inertia Fuse for HE commander skill. Like all battleships below Tier VIII, she features a 25mm bow, allowing her to be overmatched by gun sizes over 380mm. Taking citadel penetrations through the bow is very common, so proper angling is a must.

The difference between Duke of York and King George V comes in the form of anti-aircraft firepower and consumables. Duke of York features a greatly enhanced AA suite; 65 and 32 DPS on her two long range batteries, 235 on her mid-range, and 189 on her short range (in comparison to KGV’s 65, 145, and 74 on her long, mid, and short range, respectively). With the proper commander skills and upgrades, her AA can be very powerful. The raw DPS comes at the cost of a short AA range on all of her mounts, and the lack of the Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. consumable. Because she is a large and easy target, significant amounts of her AA will also be lost throughout the course of a battle as she absorbs damage from enemy high explosive shells.

Overall, Duke of York is essentially a King George V that sacrifices main battery reload and additional Repair PartyWhile active, restores a percentage of the ship's health points each second. consumables for increased anti-aircraft firepower, Hydroacoustic SearchWhile active, detects all enemy ships and torpedoes within the specified radius, without regard of obstacles such as smoke and terrain., and premium bonuses.

Pros:

    Cons:

      Research

As a premium ship, ' doesn't have any upgrades to research.

      Optimal Configuration

      Commander Skills

Key skills for ' commanders include Priority Target for Level 1, Expert Marksman for Level 2, Superintendent at Level 3, and Concealment Expert at Level 4. Many other useful skills such as Jack of All Trades, Basic Firing Training, and Fire Prevention highlight the versatile selection of skills the ship can take strengthening its guns, anti-air capabilities, or survivability.

      Consumables

' can equip the following consumables:

Premium consumables, notably Damage Control Party II (When activated, instantly repairs fires, floods, and incapacitations, and prevents more for the duration.), and Repair Party II (While active, restores a fixed percentage of a ship's hit points each second.), are recommended.

      Camouflage

As a premium ship, ' comes included with Type 10 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, and increases the amount of experience she earns.

      Signals

As a ship with a good AA battery, November Echo Setteseven (+5% continuous damage by all AA guns, +5% damage per second within the explosion radius of shells fired from medium- and long-range AA defenses.)is the best option for the ship. After that signals helping the survivability of the ship, such as India Delta (+20% to the amount of HP recovered when the Repair Party consumable is used.), India Yankee (-20% to fire duration.), or Juliet Yankee Bissotwo (-20% to flooding duration.) are always helpful. To increase her offensive capabilities, signals such as Sierra Mike (+5% to the ship's maximum speed.), and November Foxtrot (-5% reload time on all consumables.) will be useful. As she is a premium ship, XP/captain XP boosting flags such as Zulu Hotel (🚫), Equal Speed Charlie London (🚫), or the Dragon Flag (🚫) will see great gains with this ship. Juliet Charlie (-100% to the risk of your ship's magazine detonating.) is always handy to prevent a quick trip back to port.

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
