Königsberg — German Tier V cruiser.

In 1926, light cruisers were laid down according to an improved design. The new ship had a diesel-steam turbine power plant and triple-gun turrets. During World War II, Königsberg—the lead ship of her class—deployed minefields in the North Sea and participated in the invasion of Norway. During the amphibious assault at Bergen, the ship was damaged by Norwegian coastal batteries and sank in the port. Eventually, British bombers dealt the final blow, obliterating the ship.

Player Opinion

Performance

The Königsberg, or Koenigsberg, is one light cruiser that has her share of weird runs. Introduced as the representative for the whole German cruiser tree during a mission where you need to score 4 kills in a Japanese vessel of tier 4 above, she does have her quirks for a cruiser of her build. One particular iteration is her unusual turret layout where the "Bruno" or the "X" turret for the inclined does not stick to the ship's centerline. Sporting nine 150 mm guns, the Konigsberg is an effective anti-cruiser and anti-destroyer screen and can operate as a bloodhound due to her hydroacoustic search being 1 km better to detect concealed destroyers within smokescreens and has the load time of a Cleveland despite not having an extra turret like her US counterpart. As she has superb maneuverability and longest range amongst all cruisers at her tier, she is not without her drawbacks such as thin armor and glaring citadel layout; a single well-placed battleship salvo will usually kill or cripple a Königsberg. When encountering battleships, do yourself a favor and run away while taking potshots from your rear guns, as this will only reduce your firepower by a third and lowers your chances of taking a citadel hit. Play smart and the Koenigsberg will bring about very surprising results.

Pros:

  • Good ergonomics
  • Excellent range among her peers at her tier at 16.5 km
  • Good load time
  • Shell arc is slightly flat which makes it a bit easier to hit the sides of a ship
  • Surprising AP damage that can citadel cruisers above her tier if one aims correctly
  • Long hydroacoustic range
  • Reasonable AA suite
  • Shell velocity is superb
  • Very flexible torpedo arrangement, similar to early U.S. Destroyers.
  • Rear turrets can rotate 360o making switching main from port to starboard much quicker than other ships

Cons:

  • AA suite can rip planes below her but not so much at her tier and above
  • Very large citadel makes it hideously vulnerable to battleships
  • Engines and rudder are prone to damage under a hail of fire
  • A-XY turret arrangement can only fire one turret directly forwards
  • Low chance of fire is problematic against battleships
  • Low armor means modules are easily incapacitated.
  • Torpedoes have a short range of 6 km
