Player Opinion
Performance
What is basically a facemelt of the Pensacola, Northampton and Portland (which is currently represented by the tier VII premium cruiser Indianapolis), the New Orleans shows herself as a new shift in US heavy cruisers. A stocky ship, it should come as to no surprise that her armor is vastly improved from Pensacola (though that is not saying much), allowing her to at least handle herself in cruiser duels. Her AA suite is also reinforced, though it is not until the next ship in the line Baltimore that the AA becomes truly fearsome.
She has the same excellent gun performance as the Pensacola, with an improved rate of fire once the guns are upgraded. When fully specialized for concealment she has an astounding 9.1 km detection radius by sea---only barely more than the 9.0 km range of her Surveillance Radar. Despite this, pushing in at the beginning of a battle is an extremely hazardous proposition as her armor is still inadequate protection against battleships, especially considering her mediocre hit point pool. She must use islands and concealment to contribute in the early game without taking too much fire. The later stages of the game can offer more opportunities to be aggressive, whether it is hunting down enemy destroyers with her radar or ambushing enemy cruisers.Pros:
- Decently armored - can bow-tank enemy battleships better than its predecessor (Pensacola) can
- Good main batteries - fastest 203mm reloading guns for its tier, good turret traverse, and good firing range
- Decent anti-aircraft armament
- Excellent concealment - can drop down to the same range as her Surveillance Radar
Cons:
- Smallest health pool of all same tier cruisers
- Armor must to be angled to be effective - still very weak against battleship AP
Research
This is a suggested research path:
- New Orleans (B) Hull
- 203 mm/55 Mk14 main battery mod. 2
- Mk8 GFCS mod. 2
Optimal Configuration
Upgrades
The recommended upgrades for ' are as follows:
- Slot 1: Main Armaments Modification 1 keeps her guns active and firing.
- Slot 2: Steering Gears Modification 1 keeps her rudder available for dodging incoming shells.
- Slot 3: Aiming Systems Modification 1 improves her accuracy.
- Slot 4: Propulsion Modification 1 () increases her acceleration.
- Slot 5: Concealment System Modification 1 reduces her surface detectablilty.
Commander Skills
The poor range and DPS of the large caliber AA makes it not really worth it to choose Manual Fire Control for AA Armament, as the ship can reliably shoot down enemy strike aircraft with Defensive AA Fire alone.

Consumables
' can equip the following consumables:
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party
- Slot 2: Defensive AA Fire or Hydroacoustic Search
- Slot 3: Catapult Fighter or Surveillance Radar
Captain focusing ' on AA build will equip Defensive AA Fire II () for the Slot 2, especially when in a division with a carrier. Although for solo playing, Hydroacoustic Search II () is more recommended if there is no carrier around.
' captains should use Surveillance Radar II () on Slot 3 to increase their in-game impact (hunting the extremely stealthy destroyers of Tier VIII - X), as Catapult Fighter is not at all useful in hunting / spotting stealthy or smoke-covered enemy ships.
Camouflage
Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 2 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce the accuracy of incoming shells.
Players who wish to spend doubloons can equip ' with Type 18 camouflage that lowers her detection radius, reduces the accuracy of incoming shells, reduces her repair costs, and increases the amount of experience she earns.
