New Orleans — American Tier VII cruiser.
Compared to her predecessor, the new cruiser had a shorter hull because of the linear arrangement of the power plant. This arrangement allowed for increased thickness of the armor belt at the waterline. USS New Orleans participated in the Battle of the Coral Sea, the Battle of Midway, then served in the campaign off the Solomon Islands. During the battle off Cape Tassafaronga, a torpedo hit caused an explosion that severed part of her bow. After repairs, the ship participated in the landings on Saipan, in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and the invasion of Okinawa. Over the course of the war, the ship was awarded 17 battle stars.

Player Opinion
Performance
What is basically a facemelt of the Pensacola, Northampton and Portland (which is currently represented by the tier VII premium cruiser Indianapolis), the New Orleans shows herself as a new shift in US heavy cruisers. A stocky ship, it should come as to no surprise that her armor is vastly improved from Pensacola (though that is not saying much), allowing her to at least handle herself in cruiser duels. Her AA suite is also reinforced, though it is not until the next ship in the line Baltimore that the AA becomes truly fearsome.
She has the same excellent gun performance as the Pensacola, with an improved rate of fire once the guns are upgraded. When fully specialized for concealment she has an astounding 9.1 km detection radius by sea---only barely more than the 9.0 km range of her Surveillance Radar. Despite this, pushing in at the beginning of a battle is an extremely hazardous proposition as her armor is still inadequate protection against battleships, especially considering her mediocre hit point pool. She must use islands and concealment to contribute in the early game without taking too much fire. The later stages of the game can offer more opportunities to be aggressive, whether it is hunting down enemy destroyers with her radar or ambushing enemy cruisers.
Pros:
- Improved armor and rate of fire over Pensacola
- Good maneuverability
- Excellent concealment
- Solid AA suite
- Access to Surveillance Radar
Cons:
- Armor must to be angled to be effective, and is still very vulnerable to battleships
- Mediocre hit point pool
- AB-X turret layout can be difficult to kite effectively with
