Romulus — European Tier III destroyer.

A Spica-class destroyer built for the Italian Navy and transferred to Sweden in 1940. The ship was notable for her compact dimensions and the peculiar arrangement of her torpedo tubes.

Romulus is an improvement from Tatra, as it has one more main gun and two more torpedo tubes. The tubes have a rather odd arrangement - the first tube has two whereas the second has four, the only time when a Tier II destroyer has a quadruple launcher. That said, the torpedoes do not deal much damage to enemies, which is a trait of European destroyers. As with most destroyers at its tier, it has great speed and rudder shift times. When playing Romulus, it is important to know her weaknesses in a destroyer to avoid mistakes - these include her poor torpedo firing angles and slow turret rotation.

The Italian torpedo boat Spica was the lead ship of a class of 32, built to exploit a loophole in the London Naval Treaty by which torpedo boats of 600 tons or less standard displacement could be built in unlimited numbers. Italy attempted to build torpedo boats within this limit that would be nearly as powerful as destroyers. Like most Italian ships, the treaty displacement limits were deliberately exceeded. As built her actual standard displacement was 638 tons, and it was soon increased in refits to 780 tons. Most of sister ships had standard displacement in the range of 775-785 tons.

Originally the armament consisted of 3 single 100mm/47 OTO main guns, 4 single 450mm torpedo tubes, 2 twin 40mm/39 Vickers-Terni and 2 twin 13.2mm/76 Breda AA guns. In 1939 the single torpedo tubes were replaced by 2 twin 450mm tubes in line with later ships of the class, and the original AA armament was replaced by 6 twin 20mm/65 Breda autocannons.

In 1940, the first two ships of the class, Spica and Astore, were sold to Sweden and renamed Romulus and Remus (names reflecting their Italian origin). In Swedish service, rather than torpedo boats they were designated as coastal destroyers. In 1953 they were re-designated as frigates, with 1 100mm gun and both torpedo launchers removed and a British-made Squid anti-submarine rocket launcher installed in their place, along with radar and sonar equipment.

Historical Inaccuracies

• As the Italian Spica, she was armed initially with 4 single 450mm torpedo tubes and later upgraded to 2 twin 450mm tubes prior to sale to Sweden as Romulus. In neither Italian nor Swedish service did she ever have an armament of 1 twin and 1 quad launcher.
• At no point did Romulus have her 100mm OTO guns replaced with 120mm Bofors.
