Ryūjō — Japanese Tier VI aircraft сarrier.

The Washington Naval Treaty restrictions did not apply to ships with a displacement of up to 10,000 tons, so Japan started designing small aircraft carriers in addition to large ones. Ryūjō was designed taking the experience of operating Hōshō into account: She received a double-deck hangar, which allowed for increasing the air group size. Ryūjō participated in the Sino-Japanese War from 1937 through 1939. During World War II, the aircraft carrier supported landings in the Philippines, covered convoys headed to the Dutch East Indies, and participated in raids in the Indian Ocean and around the Aleutian Islands.

Player Opinion

Performance

At Tier VI, Ryujo is the first Japanese carrier to receive a full complement of monoplane aircraft. This is also the first Japanese carrier to offer an air superiority loadout with more than one fighter squadron. The choice is between that or a loadout similar to the Zuiho’s. On the downside, she uses the exact same fighters and torpedo bombers as Zuiho; only the dive bombers get upgraded to a new model.

Pros:

  • Large reserve of planes for its tier at 48 compared to Independence at 37.
  • 5 squadrons of planes in any of the upgraded loadouts.
  • Difficult to detect.
  • Relatively maneuverable, better than its predecessor Zuiho.
  • Strike loadout will deal massive damage to enemy ships.
  • Always has at least one squad of fighters with any loadout.
  • Planes outperform Independence's in almost every aspect - speed, loadout time and damage per minute.
  • Upgraded fighters are a carry-on from Zuiho and can be bought straight away if they were researched for Zuiho.

Cons:

  • Worse armor compared to other Japanese carriers.
  • Air superiority loadout is very slightly inferior to that of Independence's, since its fighters have 170 hitpoints lower and are 2 knots slower, though not significant.
  • AA is mediocre, compared to Independence’s AA.
  • Stock flight control system (1-1-2) fails in terms of either dealing damage to enemy ships if not played carefully or enemy aircraft, frequently runs out of planes.

Research

Researching a flight control group first should yield the best results. Next, research either the Mitsubishi A6M2 fighter or the Aichi D2A1 dive bomber, depending on which flight control group you chose. Upgrading to the "B" hull is primarily about the important task of replacing the 1.2 km AA guns with 3 km AA guns. Finish researching any remaining planes, then upgrade to the "C" hull, which will reduce the rudder shift time.

Optimal Configuration

Upgrades

As a carrier at Tier VI with four upgrade slots (slots 1, 2, 4, and 5), it's best to mount Air Groups Modification 1, Flight Control Modification 1 (for faster aircraft servicing time / rearming time) or Air Groups Modification 2 (for better fighter capability in fighting enemy fighters and taking down enemy bombers) and Damage Control System Modification 1 on Zuiho.

Commander Skills

As Ryujo is a Tier VI carrier with only one 4-man squadron of fighters (if the player chooses the bomber-focused loadout), it's best to choose either Aircraft Servicing Expert or Evasive Maneuver for the first skill, and then the following recommended succeeding tier skills. Demolition Expert is not a recommended skill due to the already very high fire chance by the dive bombers. Emergency Takeoff is a better skill to counter enemies attempting to set you on fire and prevent you from launching your planes.

Additionally, because Ryujo has the option to choose a fighter focused loadout (three 4-man fighter squadrons) and should the player favor said loadout, it is highly recommended to take the Air Groups Modification 2 upgrade.

Priority Target and Incoming Fire Alert are not really necessary because when a carrier is detected, the ship often becomes a priority target for many players.

Consumables

As a carrier at Tier VI, Ryujo has access to only Damage Control Party.

Camouflage

Type 1, 2, or 5 camouflage can be equipped for credits; Types 1 or 5 are recommended at a minimum to reduce detectability range.

Signals

As a carrier, Ryujo can only mount at most four signals at a time and has no risk of detonating. Players should mount Equal Speed Charlie London (for faster XP grinding / increased XP gain per battle), Zulu Hotel (when coupled with Equal Speed Charlie London greatly helps increase commander (re)training), and, for the last two / pair, November Echo Setteseven (for better bomber self-defense against fighters) and Juliet Whiskey Unaone (to have a better chance at causing flooding and dealing damage via flooding). However, the last two recommended signal flags are not highly recommended if the player wishes to conserve the signal for later tiers.
