Tiger — British Tier V battleship.

In January 1911, Japan ordered the development and construction of a battlecruiser in Great Britain that received the name "Kongō." It turned out to be better than the contemporary British ships, and because of that, a similar project was selected to build a new battlecruiser within the 1911 program. HMS Tiger was laid down in 1912 and commissioned in 1914 as a part of the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron. She saw action during the Battle of Dogger Bank, sustaining six hits, and she survived taking as many as 18 hits—largely from heavy guns—without suffering crippling damage at the Battle of Jutland a year later.

Tiger represents the Royal Navy’s Tier V entry to the battlecruiser line. In reality, HMS Tiger was the only battlecruiser of her class, designed to improve upon the Queen Mary class and prove the value of the concept of battlecruisers. In-game, Tiger may appear very similar to Queen Mary, but she incorporates more of the features typical of the Royal Navy battlecruisers; she has faster turret traverse and the addition of the engine boost consumable, as well as other improvements.

Tiger carries eight 343mm guns in four twin turrets. They are the same guns as on Queen Mary, but Tiger has more range and noticeably faster turret traverse. She has wide firing arcs and her guns are accurate but their precision is inconsistent.

Her AP shells have poor penetration and a short fuse time, so she is less likely to overpenetrate smaller targets. She may also struggle to citadel targets with thicker armor, as her shells can detonate before reaching it. For larger targets which the AP cannot adequately threaten, her HE shells have reasonable damage and an outstanding chance to start fires.

In addition to her short main battery range and poor AP penetration, both shell types have very low velocity and long flight times: hitting targets that are fast or distant is more difficult, further reducing her main battery performance at long range. For targets too far away to reliably damage with AP, her HE provides an effective substitute with its fire starting ability.

Tiger also carries four of the same torpedos found on Queen Mary. Their damage, speed and stealth are all quite average, but they have short range. Like the rest of the British battlecruiser line, her torpedoes are capable of turning once launched, allowing them to be aimed at much wider angles than expected. However, this results in a longer minimum arming distance: be aware of this when planning to use the torpedoes in close quarters.

Additionally, Tiger features a powerful but short-ranged secondary battery. Her battery of 152mm secondary guns produce good damage and have a high fire chance, as well as having improved accuracy. Although the very short default range limits their usefulness, when built for secondary range they can reach a similar range to her torpedoes.

Armor is not one of Tiger’s strengths. Most of her deck armor is thick enough to ricochet any AP shell and repel small caliber HE, and her turtle back armor scheme can protect her citadel from AP up to 356mm in caliber at short range. In total, she has some of the thickest citadel protection in her tier. Sadly, this level of armor only protects the middle of the ship. Her bow and stern plating are quite thin, causing her to take large amounts of damage from anything that does not hit her around her center from short range.

Enemy torpedoes are a threat to Tiger. Her short operating range leaves her vulnerable to torpedo attacks. Her respectable HP pool will quickly run out as her poor torpedo protection will fail to mitigate torpedo damage, which can also be difficult to repair. Aircraft can also pose a problem for Tiger; she lacks substantial AA defenses and is a larger target with poor maneuverability, making her an easy target for carrier-based attacks.

Tiger’s armor may not be able to prevent much damage, but her lighter armor translates to increased speed. With an excellent top speed and access to the engine boost consumable, she is among the fastest battleships at her tier and can quickly position, relocate or disengage. Her Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable drastically improves her acceleration to 1/4th speed. Tiger also enjoys good surface concealment; combined with her speed, she can pick and choose her fights better than most battleships.

Tiger is not a battleship, but a battlecruiser. She requires practice in weighing the options available to her. Both of her shell types have their advantages, her accuracy makes her a threat to any target, and her speed gives her a lot of flexibility. Captains should wait for the right opportunity to move in and take advantage of her close quarters strengths.

Pros:

  • Good hitpoint pool and turtleback armor scheme
  • Accurate if inconsistent main battery
  • Short AP fuse time
  • High chance to start fires
  • Has torpedoes
  • Powerful, accurate secondaries
  • High speed and access to the Engine BoostWhile active, increases a ship's speed by a fixed percentage. consumable
  • Good concealment

Cons:

  • Thin bow and stern plating
  • Short main battery range
  • Low AP penetration
  • Long shell travel time
  • Long torpedo arming distance
  • Short secondary range
  • Poor torpedo and AA defenses

Research

Researchable upgrades for Tiger:

  1. Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability and maneuverability. Research of this module unlocks progression to Renown.
  2. Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to Mk V Mod. 2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.

Upgrades

The recommended upgrades are:

Commander Skills

Tiger is a versatile ship who benefits from many skills and can be built in several ways.

  • Conventional, survivability commander builds will prioritise improving concealment, repair ability and protection from fire/torpedos.
  • Taking advantage of Tiger’s unusually strong secondaries requires Long-Range Secondary Battery Shells paired with the Slot 3 upgrade Secondary Battery Modification 1 : +20% secondary battery firing range. / -20% secondary battery dispersion. and the Mike Yankee Soxisix signal to extend her secondary battery range to a modest 6.5km, however this build applies only to Tiger and is not viable with any other ships on her tech tree line.
  • A build which includes Super-Heavy AP Shells and Furious to maximise firepower is more viable on the higher tier members of Tiger’s tech tree who possess the improved repair party consumable.

Consumables

Tiger equips the following consumables:

Note: Use of the Juliet Charlie signal makes detonation impossible.
