Unique commanders are a special sub-set of commanders. They perform the same functionality as standard commanders, but have additional bonuses or traits that make them different from their counterparts that can be recruited for free. Unique commanders are typically earned via in-game participation; whether that is as a reward for a set of event missions or at the end of a lengthy campaign depends on the commander.
