Players earn access to Upgrades starting at Account Level 6, allowing them to customize and improve each ship's performance to suit their desired play style. Ships of different tiers have access to different upgrades, defined by the tables below. Certain upgrades are unique to certain ship types or nations; check the Notes column for more detail.

Purchasing Upgrades

Upgrades may be purchased and mounted for credits. Some packages for purchase, challenge rewards, and mission rewards may also grant upgrades.

One upgrade can be mounted in each slot. A mounted upgrade may be sold for half of its purchase cost. Or, it may be demounted to Inventory for 25Doubloons. When selling a ship, all upgrades mounted on that ship must either be sold or demounted.

With 0.8.0, a number of upgrades pertaining to aircraft carriers and AA changed.

  1. Research seems to show that the specific effects are as follows:
    • -50% to time for reaching full power. This is the time needed to "spool" the engines to full power in the direction the ship is traveling, and thus achieve maximum acceleration away from 0 knots. In other words, it increases the second derivative of speed (until the engines reach full power). It will not decrease the time it takes to reverse the engines to decelerate towards 0 knots. This effect is applied at all speeds.
    • Increases engine power when the ship starts moving. This increases the ship's acceleration away from 0 knots when between -6 and 6 knots displayed speed. In other words, it increases the first derivative of speed (within this speed band). It does not improve the ship's deceleration towards 0 knots.

The spotting mechanics ignore line-of-sight obstacles — such as islands — when within 2 km (3 km with this upgrade) from an enemy. That's the "assured acquisition" range. Stacks with Vigilance when spotting torpedoes.

Special Upgrades

Special upgrades are upgrades that are obtainable only through the Arsenal, currently for Coal.

These upgrades are available for use in specific slots and generally restricted to ships Tier VI and above. Ships must be able to equip the corresponding consumable in order to mount these upgrades (e.g. Des Moines cannot mount Smoke Generator Modification 1 Increases the action time of the Smoke Generator, Short-Burst Smoke Generator, Crawling Smoke Generator, Exhaust Smoke Generator, and Smoke Curtain Generator consumables.: +20% smoke screen emission time. and Gearing cannot mount Surveillance Radar Modification 1 :  +20% action time.); however, they are not automatically compatible with all ships that can mount certain consumables (Missouri cannot mount Surveillance Radar Modification 1 :  +20% action time., for example). They are mounted normally like other upgrades (i.e. you can only have one upgrade in a slot at a time).

Special upgrades that modify the effects of a corresponding consumable have no effect if that consumable is not mounted. For instance, Defensive AA Fire Modification 1 : +20% action time. / -10% cooldown time. functions only if a Defensive AA FireWhile active, the damage per second of large caliber anti-aircraft guns is increased. consumable is also mounted.

Unique Upgrades ("Legendary" Upgrades)

Unique (sometimes referred to as "Legendary") upgrades are Tier X ship-specific upgrades that are obtainable only through mission chains that relate to each Tier X ship available for credits in the tech tree. The aim of these upgrades is to adjust the characteristics of a ship to make it perform better in a specific role or offer an alternative style of gameplay. However, the unique upgrades are mounted into existing slots and have balancing parameters. They are meant to add to the variability of ship loadouts while keeping ships in balance with each other, even if one ship has the unique upgrade and another does not.

These upgrades are available for use in slots 5 and 6, depending on the ship in question. They are mounted normally like other upgrades (only one upgrade in a slot at a time) and can be sold, if desired. Be advised, though, that they cannot be re-earned; selling them is not recommended.

To obtain a unique upgrade, players must complete a chain of 5 combat missions in that ship. The chain is unlocked after playing one battle in a Tier X ship, and each step must be completed in sequential order. The missions are shared among all types of battles (even Co-Op) and are the same for all Tier X ships. Each ship must initiate their own chain, and can only progress their own missions.

Mission Chain to Earn Unique Upgrade Modules

  • Mission 1: Earn 100,000 XP (after modifiers are applied).
  • Mission 2: Earn 8,000,000Credits.
  • Mission 3: Earn 15,000 Free XP.
  • Mission 4: Win 15 battles.
  • Mission 5: Earn 40,000 base XP (before any modifiers are applied).

In addition to increasing the speed at which the engine spools up, this upgrade appears to increase acceleration away from 0 knots by a large factor (about triple, regardless of speed), making it more powerful than the standard Propulsion Modification 2 which only doubles acceleration and only between -6 and +6 knots. However, like that upgrade, it does not improve deceleration towards 0 knots. Example video.
