AMX 40
France | Light Tank | Tier IV |
The AMX 40 is a French tier 4 light tank. One of the most futuristic tanks of its time, with unique thick and rounded armour. There is almost no straight angled part on the hull and turret which gives it good shot deflection abilities.
However, like all early tier French tanks it suffers from poor speed and maneuverability. In addition, while it has thicker armour than the AMX 38, it will be Facing much higher tier opponents capable of of penetrating it.
Finally, the stock guns are woefully inadequate for its tier with only the final gun, the 75mm SA32, providing decent punch for its tier. To equip this gun requires a turret upgrade (with increased armour thickness but slower traverse) and since the tank at stock is nearly at the load limit, this will also require a suspension upgrade.
Fully upgraded, the AMX 40 can take on nearly every tank at its tier and below but will be left defenseless if caught in the open by higher tier vehicles.
- The AMX 40 leads to the more mobile AMX 12t.

Historical Info
In March 1940, the Workshop of Issy-les-Moulineaux is studying on a new medium tank of cavalry, the successor of the SOMUA S-35 and the S-40.
Brief description:
The AMX 40 Cavalry is a very futuristic modelled medium tank
Its rounded shield offers only oblique surfaces and the undercarriage consists of four road wheels which was very modern for a 1940's tank. Its general forms already address those tanks after the war.
The crew of three men, a driver, a loader / assistant to the tank commander.
The tank has a cast steel body, 60mm front armor, side 50 to 30 mm and 40 mm to the rear. Length 5.30 m, width 2.45 m
The chassis was composed of four-wheel drive twin 82cm in diameter protected with side shields. The two rear wheels are driven, which could allow the movement without the tracks. No return rollers, drive sprocket at the rear.
Disposed above the chassis fuel tanks help to strengthen the lateral protection (gas oil, unlike gasoline flame at room temperature).
Engine:
The AMX was expected to be powered by a diesel engine of 160 hp. The engine may seem a little low, only 160 hp, while the SOMUA has 190 hp and the engine of the S 40 is provided with 220 hp. The estimated weight should be very close to the SOMUA (nearly 20 tonnes). The rotation system can certainly save a significant weight and provide performance quite correct despite the power deficit.
As mentioned earlier, the choice of fuel greatly improves the safety of the craft.
Turret and armament:
The two-man turret casting has an ovoid shape that is reminiscent of the future Russian tanks of the family T-54 T-55. Access is through a hatch 60cm diameter circular on the back of the turret. The hatch follows the general shape of the turret has no growth except for two openings in the rangefinder.
Visibility is provided by a panoramic periscope on top of the turret. No slot vision seems to have been planned. The solution is attractive in terms of protection but the concentration of the overall vision of a single element can have adverse consequences in the event of retirement of the unique periscope.
The main armament is a 47mm cannon SA 35. The gun is placed in the axis of turret. The rotation is performed by hydraulic system.
Both occupants are sitting on a strap with swivel the turret gunner on the left, using the right.
The secondary armament of two 7.5 mm machine guns. The first coaxial with the gun is for close defense. And the second retractable swivel joint is placed in a compartment behind the turret and must defend against aircraft.
The supply is 156 rounds of 47mm. Storage is distributed in the periphery of the turret rotating part lockers, lockers rocking party to facilitate access to ammunition. The ammunition supply is higher by almost 50% in SOMUA
The hull:
The driver is centrally located in the front, the dashboard is in the center of the steering wheel driving, such as how the Leclerc has not innovated on that. The cockpit is surrounded on both sides of a storage system chain for around 30 chargers 7.5mm. This system used to access all of the stock without moving. Chargers are positioned in the turret for immediate use.
The AMX 40 is as a potential successor to SOMUA S 35. The S 40 S 35 which is only improved, particularly at the undercarriage, can no longer ensure a transitional role.
Compared to SOMUA, dimensions are nearly the same. The AMX is slightly shorter and less high but wider 33cm which should improve its capabilities in all terrain.
