Specifically, the mismatch in crew values caused by commander's 10% crew skill bonus. Outside of a crew of 1 commander only, 100% crew is a fiction. The client values, given for 100% crew, will normally be taken into battle with 110% crew skill members aside from specific functions, causing their actual performance to deviate from the expected client value. These differences are taken into account in tooltip boxes.

The Object 430U is a Soviet tier 10 medium tank.

The Object 430U is a version of the Object 430 medium tank with a rear placement of the engine-transmission compartment. This version was to feature a transverse placement of the engine and two planetary transmissions. This technical solution allowed for extending the interior space and decreasing the vehicle's weight. This vehicle was developed from 1953 through 1957 to replace the T-54, but the work was discontinued in favor of the Object 432 in 1961.

This tank is literally a "Heavy Medium" tank with various characteristics from both a heavy tank and a medium tank mixed together. It has decent mobility, but not as good as other mediums, good armour protection, but not as good as other heavies, and relatively good gun handling considering its mobility and armour. It's best played as spearhead tank that can lead a charge , or as an anti-medium that can fight well against lights and mediums due to its good armour, mobility and firepower.

The Object 430U marks the end of its Soviet medium line.

Player Opinion

Pros and Cons

Pros:

- Very good protection with a near impenetrable turret front with VERY strong cupolas, excellent upper glacis plate (270mm of effective armour) and useable side armour values; inarguably the best in class

- Can sidescrape with reliability, unlike other mediums

- Favourable aim time and decent dispersion penalty for its calibre

- Tied with the 121 for the highest alpha damage of all top tier medium tanks

Cons:

- Mediocre gun depression at -5°

- Worst shell velocity (due to the standard rounds being AP) and accuracy of all mediums tanks at tier; can't snipe well

- 2nd worst DPM of all researchable non-autoloading tier X mediums

- Below average mobility for medium tanks to balance out its heavy armor

- Weak lower front pate

- Turret roof can be vulnerable to high penetration HEAT rounds

Performance

Really, the Object 430U is the quintessential "bullying tank". It is able to make use of its decent mobility to take favourable positions early, and then use its excellent armour (for a medium) and high average damage to "bully" other tanks that may challenge it. Furthermore, this makes the Object 430U extremely good at picking on lower tier tanks and light tanks that will struggle to penetrate it frontally, especially when they are being bore down on by a mobile Russian medium tank. Because of these armour values, the main weakness that the Object 430U has of relatively low damage per minute values (unusually for a Russian medium tank) is mitigated, as the vehicle is allowed more time to put out powerful 440 damage shells into the enemy vehicle, making it so that winning one vs two or three lower tiered vehicles fights is very do-able.

However when fighting against other tier X vehicles, the Object 430U's armour becomes a little less extreme, as tier X tank destroyers and premium ammunition from heavy and medium tanks are capable of going through the upper glacis. On top of this, the turret roof is angled such that against AP and APCR rounds the auto-ricochet rule is applied, however against HEAT rounds it is not. It should also be noted that both the cupolas have effective armour values of 300mm+, making them not a weakspot, but they can be penetrated by HEAT rounds if they are hit at a favourable angle.

In comparison to the other 4 Russian tier X medium tanks, the Object 430U is in a completely different class due to its "heavy medium" status. Because of this, and its overall power level, any player grinding through the Russian medium tech tree branch should definitely consider picking this vehicle up, as it is not as similar to its 4 brothers due to the 122mm gun (rather than a 100mm), much improved armour, and inferior soft stats with regard to both gun handling and terrain resistances.

This vehicle is seen in competitive play due to its ability to get to strong positions quickly, and then hold them with its excellent armour. The Object 277 is also used for such a role, however the smaller size, better damage per minute and more overall flexibility of the 430U means that it still sees play for some niche roles on certain maps.

Historical Info

Object 430U (“uluchennij” – improved, or “usilenij” – strenghtened) was – although designated a medium tank – a Soviet take on how heavy and heavily armored a Soviet medium tank can get. It was (as the name suggest) a development of the Object 430 itself, but with improved armor and a 122mm D-25T gun.

The Object 430 itself was a result of the early 50′s program to find something better than the T-54. It was designed by A.A.Morozov in Kharkov between 1954-1955. More details on its history are in the Object 430 history section

In 1954, the construction bureau of the Kharkov plant No.75 made another medium tank preliminary project on its own initiative, under the designation of Object 430U. The frontal hull armor was improved to 160mm (120mm on original Object 430). The turret was also reworked in order to improve its protection and to install the 122mm D-25T gun (some sources suggest that a 130mm gun was also considered). Suspension was also reworked and the weight of the tank increased from 35,5 tons to 42 tons.

In a number of parameters (ammunition rack, ground pressure, power-to-weight ratio), the Object 430U was better than serially produced IS-3 and IS-4 heavy tanks and also the heavy experimental Object 730. As a result of the Object 430U, it was demonstrated that not only do the medium tanks have development potential, they can also achieve and surpass the parameters of heavy tanks. However, at this stage, the development of the Object 430U was stopped: by its parameters, it was effectively a heavy tank and the Soviets already had a post-war heavy tank program (which resulted in T-10) and didn’t need another one.
