Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Good gun choices
- Very mobile with the 7,5 cm gun mounted, acceptable mobility with the 8,8 cm gun
- Heavily sloped armour.
- Accurate weaponry
Cons:
- Guns are not very effective against higher-tier armor
- High-penetration guns will have no trouble punching through your armor, angled or not
- Ammo rack located next to gun, can be damaged from a frontal shot to the turret
- Relatively thin armor
Performance
The VK 30.02(D) is largely considered a two-faced tank, mainly because its playstyle depends heavily on which turret you decide to mount. The upgraded turret weights a full 1,745 pounds more than the stock turret, greatly reducing the tank's mobility, but allowing you to mount the more powerful 8,8 cm Kw.K. 36 L/56 gun. The stock turret will only allow the tank to mount the 7,5 cm Kw.K. 42 L/70 gun.
With the 7,5 cm gun mounted, the VK 30.02(D) resembles a hybrid of the Comet and the Panther, having a high top speed and astounding mobility, but with a high penetration, high accuracy gun. This variant of the VK 30.02(D) has an exceptional traverse speed of 42 dps, which is much higher than other tier VII mediums such as the T-43 or the Comet, but lacks in turret traverse speed, which is an abysmal 32 dps compared to 46 dps on the Comet. The tank has better terrain resistance compared to its rivals, providing a more consistent and smooth ride.
With this gun mounted you will want to play the tank as a flanker, second-line sniper, or supporting force. Because of its exceptional top speed of 56 kph and its amazing terrain resistance, the VK 30.02(D) will be able to reach key locations faster than other mediums, and will be capable of defending locations for short periods of time, until your team's heavies can arrive to provide more solid support. Another good tactic is to stay behind your heavies and provide ranged, accurate fire, before breaking off and flanking after learning where the enemy's bulk force is. Like most mediums, this tank should not travel alone unless safety is guaranteed, and will perform well with other mediums close by.
The 8,8 cm gun completely changes the tank's playstyle. The turret traverse, incredibly, goes further down to 30 dps, but increases the tank's hitpoints by 100. The turret greatly improves in armor and adopts a more sloped shape, further increasing the chance to bounce shells. In terms of firepower, the gun's penetration drastically drops by 18 mm, but alpha damage increases by a whopping 85 hitpoints. Damage rolls will often reach 220 hp and will drastically adjust how the tank plays. Because the reload drops by about 5.5 rounds per minute, you will need to adopt a more cautious playstyle and take advantage of cover.
The tank becomes much slower when the top turret is mounted, meaning you will not be able to flank as effectively as if you had the stock turret. Your tank will invariably become more conservative in play, being forced to remain closer to the main action in order to take shots. Find good cover and use peek-a-boo tactics to open fire, taking advantage of the high alpha damage to chop large chunks of health away.
