Performance
The VK 45.02 A is an oddball in the Maus heavy tank line, since it plays more like a medium tank than a proper heavy like the Maus or the VK 45.02 B after it. The unusual performance of this tank could be the reason it was often overlooked, underestimated, or even regarded as the weakest tank in the line. Despite this, the VK is a very capable tank that could be very powerful.
Your team line-up can dictate which of the two play styles you use: Supporting heavy or Heavy Medium.
If your team is mainly consisting of HTs, follow and support them. The superior mobility of the VK means you could reach choke points and flanking positions faster than the other heavies, spotting for your team and setting up crossfires while they are getting into position. The mobility also comes in handy when there'a a medium or light tank flanking your heavies, being able to compete with their DPM or even chase them down.
If your team is mostly consisting of MTs, follow their wolfpack or even lead their charge. The armour and health pool of the VK means your can eat a few shots for your team, and the 10,5 cm gun can be used to trade effectively against mediums and lights as the alpha damage is pretty good compared to their smaller guns. Though be careful of higher tier mediums, as they have similar alpha, enough penetration to pen you anywhere and superior ROF.
The strength of the VK 45.02 A lies in its versatility, capable of being a supporter, flanker or brawler depending on the situation and switch between these three roles on the fly. Although arguably the IS3 also shares this trait (with a devastating gun and formidable armour), the VK comes with better soft gun stats, better DPM, and better mobility. The Bristish Caernarvern could also be seen as a heavy-medium hybrid, though the VK have better alpha and mobility. Watch the mini-map, read and adapt to the situation, and the VK 45.02 A will serve you well.
Early Research
- The second engine and the second 8,8cm gun are already available from the Tiger (P), mount them immediately.
- You may already have the top 10,5cm if you have played the Tiger II before
- First research the top 10,5 cm gun, then the top engine and tracks. Lastly the top turret.
