Pros and Cons

Pros:


  • Very good aim time for a 120mm gun (1.62 seconds!), the fastest of its type.
  • Good standard APCR shell speed of 1134m/s, good standard penetration of 270mm
  • Strong and angled turret capable of deflecting many shots where other German tanks could not. Also comes with a spaced gun ma
  • Decent mobility at 50km/hr stock
  • Very small and angled lower plate that can be hard to hit even at medium distances


Cons:


  • There is a cupola easily penetrated by all tiers, and the frontal turret slope can be penetrated by HEAT rounds.
  • While small, the lower plate is easily penetrated by any tier 8+ opponent. There is also an ammorack present on the opposite
  • Sidescraping can be unreliable due to the raised engine deck
  • No side spaced armor unlike the Maus or E100, will require greater patience and caution to sidescrape.
  • Somewhat mediocre HEAT pen of 320mm


Performance

The Kampfpanzer 07 P(E), often abbreviated to KPZ PE, is one of the newer German tanks, and certainly the oddest one out of the bunch. The main thing that might come to mind is the striking physical resemblance to the Leopard 1. In fact, you would be forgiven for thinking this was a up-armored Leopard. However, there is much more than that. The gun on the KPZ is also an oddity among its 120mm peers, having 410 alpha instead of the typical 400. This also comes with somewhat higher standard pen of 270mm, which one of the highest standard penetration values of all HTs. The 120mm gun also has supremely superb aim time for such a caliber, being faster than even some medium tanks at 1.62 seconds stock.

The turret is very thickly armored, somewhat typical of a German Heavy. However, unlike the Maus or E100, which get their thickness from raw numbers, the KPZ gets a smooth and angled turret, encouraging a hulldown playstyle as opposed to brute-force engagements. The turret, while decently armored, also has a long profile, making engaging multiple opponents a very risky proposition. The hull is quite good, and the upper plate has a "Shovel" that acts as additional spaced armor against HEAT shells, but do not count on it to protect you from high pen AP or APCR rounds. While the lower plate is small and hard to penetrate, standard rounds from almost any tier 8 and up can penetrate you. Again, hulldown is encouraged to deal away with this problem. While sidescraping comes into mind, this is also an risky idea, since doing so exposes the small but elevated engine deck. This can be penetrated in close quarters by more knowledgeable opponents. Sidehugging taller opponents can also work, however keep in mind that you are not as short as a Object 140 or an STB, so some terrain irregularities may enable them to dip their guns down far enough to overmatch your turret roof.

Mobility-wise, the KPZ 07 P(E) has a decent top speed. It is capable of reaching 50km/hr thanks to its decent P/W ratio, which is much better than its superheavy contemporaries. This speed is enough to get to positions faster than most other heavies, excluding dedicated "fast heavies" such as 277s and 5As. The mobility is good enough to rotate between hotspots and perform one's duties adequately. Do note that while this tank is a frontline assault vehicle, it is a good idea to have allies, as your the thin sides are easily penetrated if overangled or pushed upon. It is a good idea to use your superior speed to catch key positions and put out early shots or roll with mediums to lend some extra firepower/armor. A final thing to note is that the lower plate hides an ammorack, so take care not to expose it often.

Overall, the Kampfpanzer 07 P(E) is a fresh and fun addition to the game. The surprising gun characteristics can lend great enjoyment, and the sheer versatility the tank commands ensures it has a place on every battlefield. When commanded by a player who keeps this in mind, the KPZ is a versatile vehicle that will reward its user greatly.


Early Research

Since the KPZ 07 P(E) is labeled as a reward/elite tank, there is no research that is required. This tank however, required participation in the Assembly shop event, where one could spend credits, gold, free xp, and/or bonds to "build" the tank. The tank itself cost 800,000 free xp or 40,000 bonds. In the event, one could combine different resources (e.g. free xp, blueprints, bonds, credits, gold), however, this tank is still quite costly to produce. The vehicle will most likely not re-appear anytime soon due to WG's fashion of releasing a new Assembly shop vehicle every new "season".
