Asashio

Asashio — Japanese
• Premium • Tier VI • Destroyer.
Japanese destroyer Asashio was the ultimate ship of this type in Japan, built after the launch of the Fubuki-class ships. The absence of constraints on displacement allowed naval architects to find a good balance between speed, armament, and hull size. Due to a good overall layout, Asashio served as a prototype for the majority of subsequent Japanese destroyers.

Player Opinion
Destroyer - AsashioPros:
- Stealthy, with a 4.8km surface detection range when fully kitted out.
- Torpedoes are extremely powerful.
- Access to both Torpedo Reload Booster
and Smoke Generator
at the same time.
Cons:
- Slow turret traverse and reload hinder her ability to gunfight other ships, especially destroyers.
- Slow speed for a destroyer at only 35 knots.
- No AA defense to speak of.
Performance
History
Destroyer - Asashiohe construction of Asashio began an important stage in Japanese destroyer design. Since Japanese designers were no longer constrained by the weight limitations on destroyers that plagued the Fubuki and Akatsuki destroyer classes, they could create a high-performance destroyer fit for operations in the Pacific. Asashio was laid down in September 1935 and entered service in August 1937 after some refits. Her design was very successful, making Asashio one of the most powerful destroyers in the world at the time. During World War II, Asashio served as the flagship for Destroyer Division 8, which participated in the invasions of Malaya, the Phillipines, and other islands in the Southwest Pacific. She participated in the Battle of Badung Strait, sinking a Dutch destroyer with one of her powerful 610mm “Long Lance” torpedoes. In 1942, Asashio participated in the Battle of Midway where she survived a direct hit from a 500 lb bomb and helped escort the cruiser Mogami for repairs. After several months of repairs, Asashio joined the Guadalcanal campaign and made several “Tokyo Express” runs. But time was running out. She was sunk in March 1943 by another 500 lb bomb received during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, one of the biggest disasters in Japanese Naval History.
- Asashio carried reloads for her torpedoes, unlike many World War II destroyers. To reflect this in-game, she has 1 Torpedo Reload Booster!
- One of the Clemson-class destroyers damaged by Asashio during the Battle of Badung Strait was eventually captured, repaired, and commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy.
- She bombarded Corregidor Island (Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s command post earlier in the campaign) during the Japanese Invasion of the Philippines.
