Performance
History
Cruiser - Exeter BExeter was the last heavy cruiser built for the Royal Navy and is most famous for participating in the Battle of River Plate against the Graf Spee. Commissioned in 1931, Exeter was on the small side for heavy cruisers. She carried only six 8-inch guns in twin turrets and two triple torpedo tubes but proved to be quite a durable ship.
- Exeter was a York-class cruiser, essentially a scaled-down version of the previous County-class. She saw active service throughout the interbellum near America and the West Indies, putting her in a prime position to pursue the Graf Spee whenever the war started.
- On December 13, 1939 Exeter—along with Leander-class cruisers Ajax and Achilles—engaged the Graf Spee. In the fighting, Exeter dealt the critical blow to the Graf Spee that made it impossible for the German ship to return home. All this came at a cost, Exeter was hit by seven 283mm shells and was severely damaged. After over a year of repairs, Exeter returned to duty.
- Exeter tested some new features for Royal Navy cruisers, including vertical funnels and a new bridge design that became a staple of Royal Navy cruisers.
- In early 1942, Exeter fought in the Battle of Java Sea, but was sunk by two Myoko-class cruisers.
