Commander Bio:Gunichi Mikawa (1888-1981) was a vice admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy (1940). He began his career as a naval officer in 1910, when he graduated from the Naval Academy, ranked third in his class. After that, he attended Naval Torpedo and Gunnery Schools, Japanese Naval War College, spent some time serving as an instructor at the Naval Torpedo School, and commanded heavy cruiser Aoba. At the end of the 1930s, this gifted admiral served in the Imperial General Headquarters and the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff. At the beginning of the war in the Pacific Ocean, Mikawa was in command of a battleship division and covered the attacks on Peart Harbor and Midway. He also took part in capturing the British Malaya and Indian Ocean raid. In the summer of 1942, he took command of the 8th Fleet based in Rabaul. Up until the spring of 1943, he led Japanese naval forces in the Battle of Guadalcanal. One of the most glorious victories of the Japanese Navy was the Battle of Save Island that took place in August 1942, where Mikawa's cruiser squadron smashed the Allied forces with heavy fire and torpedo salvos and sank four heavy cruisers, all in under an hour. |
