In 1939, Dutch authorities decided to build capital ships for their navy, prioritizing high speed to evade stronger foes like the Japanese Kongō-class battlecruisers. The design featured a 16,000-ton displacement, a maximum speed of 32-33 knots, and 8-inch (203 mm) guns. However, the naval committee deemed the armor insufficient, and the project was never completed.
