Commander Bio:Harold Bruce Farncomb (1899-1971) was a rear admiral (1947) in the Royal Australian Navy. He was the first Australian-born RAN officer to reach a flag rank in the Royal Australlan Navy.
Farncomb was among the first group of 23 graduates of the newly establish ed Royal Australian Navy College, known as the pioneer class. During the pre-war era, he served on destroyer HMAS Stalwart, was executive officer on heavy cruiser HMAS Australla, commanded sloop HMS Yarra, and met the outbreak of World War II as commanding officer on HMAS Perth. He was so convinced that war with Germany was inevitable that, in 1937, he took a leave to visit the country. During World War II, he commanded heavy cruiser HMAS Canberra, hunting German raiders in the Indian Ocean, HMAS Australia during her service in the Pacific, and escort carrier HMS Attacker, supporting the allied invasion in Southern France. During the war, Fanrcomb received very high remarks from his senior officers for his Intelligent command and was made Companion of the Order of the Bath, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, and Member of the Royal Victorian Order. |
