A heavy cruiser that matched most ships of her type in terms of speed and the power of her armament. The ship boasted distinct advantages typical of the Germany Navy's ships, i.e. an advanced gun fire control system and a high level of survivability. Those advantages were the result of the ship's decent armor protection, rugged construction, and her elaborate subdivision into compartments.

Player Opinion

Cruiser - Hipper

Pros:

  • Large HP pool.
  • Very impressive AP shell damage.
  • Excellent range, favorable dispersion, and high shell velocity from her main battery.
  • Excellent firing angles of her main battery.
  • Angling works well despite relatively low main armor belt value; turtleback armor scheme makes her more resilient to non-battleship AP at medium and close ranges.
  • Hull B has a good AA suite.
  • Powerful torpedo armament; if Hipper is allowed to deploy her torpedoes, they can be devastating.



Cons:

  • Only 8 main battery guns limits her damage output.
  • Low top speed for her tier.
  • Heavy torpedo armament is only suitable for close-range engagements and ambushes.
  • Vulnerable citadel via long-range plunging fire (due to lack of deck armor).
  • HE shell damage and fire chance are below average.
  • Poor concealment.
  • Exceptionally vulnerable to big caliber HE shells; her engine is easily damaged.

  • Rudder-shift time lowered by 10% for both hulls.
  • Repair Party cooldown time reduced (from 80 s to 60 s) and her HP now restores 20% faster.

May 2021

  • Main battery reload time reduced from 13 s to 11.5 s
  • For Hull B, HE shell maximum damage increased from 2500 to 2700
  • For Hull B, AP shell maximum damage increased from 5900 to 6000
