Performance
Iwaki is, arguably, one of the best premiums at its tier in the game. While she looks like an uptiered Tenryu, she is a complete and total upgrade. Iwaki has an incredible amount of flexibility, due to its armament and utility. The former is composed of five, single gun 140 mm turrets, with three surrounding the bridge superstructure. Four of these guns are forward facing, which heavily favor aggressive gameplay. This is slightly different from the configuration of the Tenryu, which only has two, and should be played more passively.
Iwaki’s torpedoes are upgraded from the standard 8 km to the longer range 10 km variant, akin to the tier IV Furutaka. Although it carries six, firing effectively can be a challenge due to the fact the triple launchers are spaced so far apart along the center-line. At first glance it may appear it has a wide firing arc, but the two launchers merely overlap roughly half of it. This can lead to moments when only three torpedoes are available when a full salvo is needed. Regardless, they are devastating and should always be a concern for opposing players.
The most unique aspect of Iwaki is the ability to equip three modifications, similar to tier VI tech tree ships. Like Yubari, it has access to the invaluable Aiming Systems Mod 0, giving it laser accuracy. Curiously, it can also equip AA Guns Mod. 2, but this should not be considered. Additionally, Iwaki is the only IJN cruiser with smoke. Combined with sonar, it possesses the tools to deal with every problem.
Equip both Aiming Systems Mod 0 and 1, and Steering Gears Mod. 2. Use Mikawa to leverage his concealment trait and maximize his maneuverability/survivability skills. Yamamoto, for additional AP penetration, and AL Atago, for stealthier torpedoes and HE damage (with Arsonist), are great alternatives. Pressure DDs early, but be careful not to overextend. If teammates are spotting, do not hesitate to utilize one’s own smoke offensively. Otherwise it can be used defensively to get away and reposition.
Iwaki is rarely available for purchase. It was available for a short time in the Premium, Deluxe, and Ultimate Editions of the Founder’s Packs upon the game’s release. That particular ship was eventually renamed to Iwaki FE, along with the Arkansas FE, Marblehead FE, and Gremyashchy FE to reflect their unique status. Later, Iwaki was included in the physical release of the Firepower Deluxe Edition with Kamikaze, Texas, and Arizona.
