In 1915, the Netherland passed a fleet reinforcement law to protect their East Indies colonies. Cruiser Java was laid down in 1916 as a part of this program. She was commissioned in 1925 and remained in the East Indies until 1937, when she was sent to Europe for refurbishment and Goerge VI's coronation review. During WWII, Java operated in the East Indies under ABDA command until she was sunk in the Java Sea in February 1942.
