Commander Bio: 

Karel Doorman (1889-1942) was a Schout-bij-nacht (equivalent of a rear admiral) of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Coming from a military family, he joined the Navy at the age of 17. After three years of service in the waters of the Dutch East Indies, Doorman joined the only developing naval aviation branch, becoming of it its pioneers. He rose from pilot to a De Kooy aviation base commander within a few years. Later, while studying at the Higher Naval School, Doorman specialized in ship-aviation interactions. In 1937, he was appointed captain of cruiser HNLMS Java.

In 1940, he became the head of the East Indies Squadron with light cruiser HNLMS De Ruyter as his flagship. In February 1942, after the war had broken out in the Pacific, he was appointed commander of the ABDACOM (American-British-Dutch-Australian Command) Combined Striking Force operating in the region. With orders to repel Japanese attacks at any cost, Schout-bij-nacht Doorman went down with HNLMS De Ruyter on February 28, 1942, while fighting overwhelming enemy forces.
