History
Krasny Krym was the first light cruiser built for the Soviet Navy, originally named Svietlana, then renamed Profintern in 1922, and renamed again in 1939 to Krasny Krym. She was finally commissioned in 1928, nearly 15 years after being laid down. In the late 1930s, she received a major overhaul for increased Anti-Aircraft firepower.
When World War II began, Krasny Krym was serving in the Black Sea. She provided fire-support to the Soviet troops defending Odessa, Sevastopol, Feodosiya, and many other battles throughout the Black Sea campaign. In the Kerch-Feodosiya Operation, Krasny Krym took eleven hits from artillery and mortars, but took minimal damage. After the war, she was in active service until 1954, when she was relegated to a training role. Krasny Krym was scrapped in 1959.
- For her performance and valor in the Siege of Sevastopol, Krasny Krym was given a Guards title.
- Her World War II service was cut short in 1943 by limitations on using large naval units in the Soviet Navy.
