History
Destroyer - LeningradLeningrad was the first major warship completely designed and built in the Soviet Union.
Based on the design work from the Podvoisky, Leningrad was an absurdly fast ship and quite large for a destroyer. She was armed with five new model 130mm guns and two quadruple torpedo launchers. Unusually for a Russian destroyer, she was built to her design weight and not over-laden. This was fortunate, as the design was already top-heavy to begin with.
- Leningrad entered service in December 1936 and participated in the Winter War and World War II. During the Winter War, she bombarded Finnish positions alongside her sister Minsk.
- When Operation Barbarossa began, Leningrad was supporting the area around Tallinn by escorting minelayers and providing gunfire.
- She remained in the Baltic for the entire war, was damaged by mines and artillery shells several times, but kept on providing much needed naval support for the Red Army.
- Leningrad served until 1962, when she was sank as a test target for anti-ship missiles.
- Most of her gunfire support actions were in defense of her namesake city.
