Player Opinion
Pros:
- Extremely high rate of fire
- Extremely high HE and AP damage per minute values
- Above average fire-starting potential
- Long duration Smoke Generatorconsumable
- Fast turret traverse
- Long range torpedos
- Fast rudder shift time and small turning radius
Cons:
- Floaty shell arcs makes hitting targets at long range difficult
- Torpedos are some of the weakest at its tier
- AA will not stop a determined airstrike
- Bad concealment values
Performance
Changes
Black Deals Under A Black Flag
- Main battery reload time reduced from 4.0 s to 3.6 s
- Upgraded torpedo range increased from 6.4 km to 8.0 km
History
USS Mahan (DD-364) was an american destroyer and the lead ship of her class, laid down for the US Navy in 1934. An evolution of the preceding Farragut class, they had a pretty similar architecture as their predecessor with the same armament of five dual purpose 5 inches/127mm, but with an improved torpedoes armament (3x4 instead of a 2x4 armament, even if the torpedoes broadside is the same because of wing-mounted torpedoes) and turbine system ; They were also fitted with emergency generators, which was a first in destroyer designs.
She received 5 battle stars during world war two for her service in the pacific.
Commissioned in 1936, Mahan was assigned in the Atlantic where she conducted her shakedown trials at the same time as a goodwill tour in south-americains ports. Mahan stayed in the Atlantic until mid-1937, before being assigned to the east coast to conduct multiple fleet exercises. Assigned at Pearl Harbor in mid-1938, she took part in multiple training and patrols until 1941. During the Japanese Raid on Pearl Harbor, she was at sea with the carrier USS Lexington (CV-2) and a group composed of three heavy cruisers and four destroyers. Joined by USS Indianapolis (CA-35) and a destroyer squadron, the newly formed Task Force 11 was tasked to try to track down and intercept the Japanese Carrier Force. In early 1942, Mahan returned to Pearl Harbor alongside two other destroyers to contribute to the transport of a hundred Marines to Johston islands before returning to Hawaii.
In 1942, Mahan took part in a couple of convoy escorts before being assigned to Task Force 17, gathered around the carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5). She contributed to the ASW screen of the task force and contributed to raids over the Marshalls and Gilbert Islands and patrol around the Canton Islands before returning to the west coast of the United States for an overhaul. Returning to service in the middle of the year, Mahan was assigned to Task Force 16 alongside the carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6), in the Destroyer Division 9. Mahan later took part in the battle of Santa Cruz as part of Task Force 61 (Fusion of Task Force 16 and 17), contributing to the AA cover of the US Navy fleet and witnessing the loss of USS Hornet (CV-8). After the battle, Mahan collided with USS South Dakota (BB-57), damaging the destroyer bow. Repaired in New Caledonia and fitted with a temporary now, she joined Pearl Harbor in the late of 1942 for a proper repair.
After repair, Mahan resumed convoy escort and screening duty in 1943, contributing to the landing operation at Nassau Bay and in New Guinea. She was deployed for patrols until late 1944 when she was deployed to support the landing operations at Leyte Island. Mahan spotted nine Japanese torpedo bombers on her radar. Three United States fighters intercepted them before they could attack the destroyer : three bombers were shot down and two, heavily damaged. One of the bombers tried to drop her bomb on Mahan, but was shot down by the destroyer AA. A second one tried too but missed the bomb run, and proceeded to crash in the left flank of the ship. A third plane hit her on the other flank, and a last plane did the same on the same flank while the crew of the ship maintained the AA fire and the ship afloat. Mahan was abandoned after the explosion of the ordinance of the forwards magazine, and two destroyers joined the floating wreck and saved the survivor before scuttling Mahan with torpedoes and gunfire.
In World of Warships Legends, USS Mahan is perfectly represented in her original configuration in her hull A, being in her as-build condition. However, the hull B is different from her historical counterpart. First, she’s fitted in-game with four single 20mm AA Oerlikon guns, when in history she was fitted with five of them, and she lacks two double 40mm AA Bofor guns. Her bridge and front mast are also wrong : both hulls share the same bridge and mast, where in history they were changed between 1936 et 1942.
