Commander Bio: 

Matsuji Ijuin (1893-1944) was a vice admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy. The talents of the future victor of the Battle of Vella Lavella became apparent after he completed a torpedo warfare course and was appointed as an instructor. On the brink of the 1930s, Ijuin commanded various destroyers including one of the newest Akatsuki-class ships. By the end of the decade, he had a full squadron of destroyers under his command, and he saw the start of the war in the Pacific as captain of the heavy cruiser Atago.


His finest hour came in the summer and autumn of 1943, when he was in charge of a destroyer squadron during the Solomon Islands campaign. The Battle of Vella Lavella was the last victory of the Japanese Navy. During it, torpedoes from Ijuin's ships significantly damaged their American counterparts, thus contributing to the successful evacuation of the island's garrison. Less than a month later, during the Bougainville campaign, his flagship was sunk. The admiral himself escaped with the aid of a Japanese submarine; however, Ijuin met his demise at the hands of an American submarine during the spring of 1944 off the coast of Saipan Island.
