Commander Bio:Nikolay Gerasimovich Kuznetsov (1904-1974) was the Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union (1955). An outstanding naval commander who contributed a great deal to the development of the Soviet Navy, he gained his first combat experience at the age of 15, during the Russian Civil War, having joined the naval forces of the Red Army. After graduating from the Naval School and academy, he served in the Black Sea on light cruisers for several years, earning the reputation of a talented artilleryman and an exemplary commanding officer. In 1936, he was sent to Spain as the chief naval advisor to take part in the Spanish Civil War on the republican side. In 1939, Kuznetsov became People's Commissar of the Navy at the age of 34. He spent the next two years preparing the fleet for military actions. Kuznetsov developed a system of combat training that allowed the Soviet Navy to successfully repel the initial attacks of Germany in June 1941. Kuznetsov led the navy until the end of the war and then returned to this post in the early 1950s. During this period, he consistently supported the implementation of advanced weapons and promoted the initiatives of new ship designs, putting emphasis on the role of cruisers and aircraft carriers. |
