Commander Bio:Otto Ciliax (1891-1964) was an Admiral of the Kriegsmarine (1943). He began his service several years prior to the outbreak of World War I. At the beginning of 1916, he completed submarine commander training and, by the end of the war, earned a significant number of awards. Later, he served on torpedo boats and worked in the operations department of the Naval High Command. During the second half of the 1930s, he commanded heavy cruiser Admiral Scheer and battleship Scharnhorst. At the outbreak of World War II, Ciliax was the chief of staff of Navy Group West, and supervised fleet operations in the Atlantic and the North Sea. Appointed as a commander of battleships in 1941, the admiral went on to prepare and carry out one of the most difficult and impressive operations of Kriegsmarine-the Channel Dash-In February 1942, which involved the breakthrough of German heavy ships across the English Channel. Having ensured complete covertness at the initial stage, the admiral navigated his squadron literally in front of the faces of the Brits, easily repelling the late strikes of enemy destroyers and aircraft. From March 1943, and up until the very end of the war, Ciliax commanded the naval forces based in Norway. which were targeting the Allied Arctic convoys. |
