Commander Bio:Raizō Tanaka (1892-1969) was a vice admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy (1944). After he graduated from the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy in 1913, he attended basic torpedo school where he would later become the instructor. From 1930, he commanded several destroyers in succession, then light cruiser Jintsu, and battlecruiser Kongo. In 1941, he took command of a destroyer squadron.
During World War II, he gained notoriety as an outstanding naval commander and tactician-a master of night combat and torpedo attacks. He took part in a wide range of battles during the Solomon Islands campaign, during which he was wounded several times. In November 1942, he crushed the American squadron in the Battle of Tassafaronga. Thanks to stealth, masterful maneuvering and the powerful torpedo armament of his destroyers, Tanaka destroyed or disabled 4 out of 5 enemy cruisers. |
