Wichita CE — American Premium Tier VII Cruiser.

A heavy cruiser that inherited architecture and arrangement from the Brooklyn-class light cruisers. Unlike ships of the previous class, Wichita had a new design of the main battery turrets which provided a higher firing accuracy. In addition, she had heavier armor and carried more advanced dual-purpose guns.

Wichita was released as the final reward of the Lone Veteran campaign, which took place from June 22nd to July 26th, 2020. The ship later got renamed Wichita CE as a new, alternative version (Wichita) with tweaked stats got released. This "old" version of the ship is no longer obtainable in any way (as the "CE" letters mean Collector's Edition).

Entered Service: 1939

Player Opinion

Pros:

  • Strong AP shells with improved penetration angles
  • Reasonably well-armored for a cruiser, with a 27 mm plating that can bounce up to 381 mm AP shells
  • Decent AA defenses
  • Access to the Surveillance RadarLegends_Surveillance_Radar.pngconsumable
  • Excellent rudder shift and good turn radius
  • Decent concealment

Cons:

  • Small hitpoint pool for an American heavy cruiser
  • Lower AP damage and penetration compared to its techtree counterpart Baltimore
  • Subpar shell velocity and high shell arcs make long range gunnery challenging
  • Lacks torpedoes, like most American cruisers

Performance

History

The Wichita was a one-of-a-kind heavy cruiser built for the US Navy that saw extensive service in World War II, thus being a “Lone Veteran.” Originally, Wichita was slated to become a New Orleans-class cruiser, but the USN decided to take a risk and combined improved turrets from a New Orleans-class with a modified Brooklyn-class cruiser hull. This allowed them to optimize her performance and provided the basis for the later Baltimore-class.

Wichita entered service in early 1939 and was a part of the Atlantic theatre when the US entered the war. There, she took part in the disastrous PQ17 convoy and dueled the Jean Bart and other French forces during Operation Torch.

  • Wichita transferred to the Pacific in late 1942/early 1943.
  • She assisted in the Aleutian Islands campaign, as well as the comedic “Battle of the Pips”
  • During the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Wichita assisted in sinking the light carrier Chiyoda.
  • Wichita served throughout the Pacific, providing gunfire support up until the end of the war.
