Z-39

Z-39 — German
• Premium • Tier VI • Destroyer.
The last sister ship of destroyer Z-23 belonged to a series of ships laid down after the start of World War II (Type 1936A Mob). She carried 150 mm guns. Between 1944-1945, the ship underwent an overhaul which saw the considerable reinforcement of her AA defenses. This, however, required that one of the ship's main guns be demounted.

History
Destroyer - Z-39Z-39 was the last Type 1936A “Mob” destroyer built for the German navy and was only fully operational in January 1944 after nearly three and a half years of construction. The Type 1936A destroyers are notable for their heavy main battery armament, mounting four 150mm (5.9-inch) guns. These remain the heaviest main battery guns ever mounted on an operational destroyer.
- Z-39’s service in the German Navy ranged from minelaying to shore bombardment in the Baltic, helping lay some 2,800 mines.
- Late in 1944, she was damaged by Soviet and British bombers and had to be repaired with parts from the incomplete Z44 and Z45. Afterwards, she served non-stop
providing shore bombardment support and assisting in the evacuation of many refugees.
- She was decommissioned from the Kriegsmarine after the surrender, and was sent to England, then Boston and commissioned into the US Navy as DD-939.
- After extensive testing of her high-pressure boiler systems, Z-39 was sent to serve in the French navy, who used the ship for parts and scrapped her in 1964.
- Z-39 served in 3 different navies, or even 4—if you count her transit under British & German crew to England.
- As part of the “Mob” series of Type 1936A destroyers, her engines were more reliable and she was slightly larger.
