Castilla — Spanish Tier X cruiser.
While developing their own heavy cruisers, Spanish engineers actively adopted Italian experience and the latest achievements of Italian engineering in the field of ship armor protection and armaments. The knowledge gained could have culminated in a project based on a fusion of Italian and Spanish naval design thinking—projects of the Ansaldo cruisers and a project for a "Super Washington" cruiser from the Ferrol shipyard.
Castilla was first released for sale on DD MMM YYYY.

The Ship
Castilla, is the Tier X Spanish heavy cruiser, capping off the tech tree line by succeeding the Andalucía, this ship embodies Italian ship design of a fast and maneuverable ship, which maintains good armor protection and survivability for her class. The standout feature is the ability to burst fire two salvos in 1.5 seconds, with a cooldown after. As this feature is an Alternative Fire mode, Castilla is able to utilize it as many times as she wants in a battle. Sporting 254mm guns supported by a solid mix of consumables in a maneuverable, fairly well protected package.
Armor and Survivability
Castilla has the armor protection and health pool fitting of a heavy cruiser. Her hull resembles the Napoli, but only in shape, her armor protection is different, and less effective. It follows the same spaced armor scheme of Andalucia, with a slightly thicker side plate within her hull that helps protect her citadel from small caliber rounds, such as those of light cruisers and destroyers. Another place she differs from Napoli is her icebreaker, which protects her nose from large caliber shells from punching through to her citadel - this icebreaker doesn’t cover as much of her bow, nor does it match that of a German icebreaker for example, meaning shells can still punch through the thinner plating above it more regularly. This is still an improvement over some other heavy cruisers in her tier such as the Goliath or the Kommissar. She has a health pool of 51,000 HP, which is standard for a tier X heavy cruiser, and gives her a comfortable margin to play in. Also given her highly competitive speed and concealment, she becomes quite survivable for a cruiser. Even with good armor and a respectable health pool for a cruiser, captains still must be careful, other heavy cruisers will still be able to heavily punish her if she shows too much broadside, and most battleships at her tier will be able to punch through her nose, above the ice breaker and into her citadel. All to say she is not a bow tanking cruiser by any means, and prefers medium to long range engagements.
Armament
Castilla sports nine 254mm guns, housed in three triple gun turrets, these shoot standard HE and AP rounds, with a fair amount of accuracy, out to a base of 17.1km which can be increased further with equipment upgrades. These guns reload at a base 13 seconds, and after using burst fire mode, in 28.5 seconds, both reload times can be reduced by using the reload modification in her equipment. The guns on Castilla are quite good for a cruiser; they are a larger caliber at 254mm, hit hard, and have a comfortably flat trajectory. What really makes this ship shine is its burst fire mode, being able to fire two salvos within 1.5 seconds on demand is extremely rewarding to captains who can recognize an opportunity and capitalize on it. In addition the reload isn’t too long, so captains should not hesitate to use it. All together, these guns give Castilla a strong salvo weight, respectable sustained damage output, as well as an excellent ability to punish mistakes made by other captains. To supplement her guns, she is also equipped with a quintuple torpedo tube launcher on each side, but with a range of 8km they are mainly a deterrent against enemy ships rushing in too close. They have average damage for their tier, and a reload time of over a minute and a half (106 seconds). While also having a flood chance slightly above average for her class and tier. The torpedoes themselves are comparable to those on Goliath, although shorter range than Goliath. The torpedoes can be launched in an extremely wide spread, and at good angles while kiting away, also lending themselves as a strong deterrent for enemy ships pushing her. Castilla’s secondary battery is also nothing special, consisting of eight 128mm guns on each side, possessing a modest range of 7.7km.
Concealment and Maneuverability
Castilla is a heavy cruiser, carrying large guns for her class and thicker armor to boot. Yet she still maintains excellent maneuverability and stealth. She has a fast rudder shift time, a good turning radius and a great top speed of 37kts base. Captains can take the concealment skill and equipment upgrade to get her concealment down to 11.7km. The combination of maneuverability, speed, and stealth means captains can control the range of engagement, and dictate their own terms to most enemies. Making the ship very comfortable to play.
Anti-Aircraft suite and Anti-Submarine Warfare
Castilla is not an AA cruiser, her damage range and output is roughly average compared to other heavy cruisers, she is out matched by Des Moines and light cruisers, but she can hold her own better than the Petropavlovsk or Napoli. As for her ASW, she runs the standard two depth charge airstrikes which reload in 30 seconds. She does carry hydroacoustic search, which can be helpful finding submarines. Overall, in games where she could be threatened by planes or submarines, captains should take care to stay close to teammates for protection and safety in numbers.
Battle Performance
Castilla is a cruiser that excels in medium to long range engagements, and is generally a very comfortable cruiser to play. She can move around very quickly, largely unspotted, and lay out damage as needed. She takes the damage aspect one step further with her burst fire, allowing captains to capitalize on opportunities other ships cannot. Because burst fire is an Alternative Fire mode, she can use her burst fire as many times as she wishes throughout a match. Although many ships sport some sort of reload booster or burst fire, none of them can put it together with the same package Castilla offers. She is much better armored than Edgar, stealthier than Condé, and has larger guns than Austin. This package makes Castilla great for applying pressure to flanks and catching enemy ships off guard. She can also reposition very quickly as needed. She brings all the tools necessary to play slightly aggressive and support other friendly ships pushing, or to play passively over longer ranged fights, ready to punish any enemy that makes a mistake.Pros:
- Very high top speed, 37 knots stock
- Large gun caliber, enough to overmatch 16mm plating with AP
- Good ballistics and shell velocity
- Strong and versatile burst fire mode
- Good torpedoes for short range engagements
- Decent concealment
Cons:
- Armor scheme is a bit lacking, the bow is particularly weak
- Slow rudder shift
- Longish main gun reload
- Burst fire mode has a rather long cooldown
- Long-range and short-range AA are pretty weak
