Cataluña — Spanish Tier VIII cruiser.
After the Nationalists proclaimed victory in the Civil War, ties between Spain and the Fascist regime in Italy built up momentum. Suffering from a scarcity of modern ships of all types in its service, Spain planned to study the latest advancements in global shipbuilding, including those made by Italy. The Ansaldo company came up with three heavy cruiser projects for Spain, each with its own armament composition. One of the projects provided for armament to be made up of three 203 mm triple-gun mounts.

Combat Capability - Alternative Firing Modes

Burst fire can be toggled on and off at will.Effects:
- Reload time: 31 seconds
- Interval between individual shots: 1.8 seconds
- Number of bursts in a series: 2
As the first high-tier ship in the Spanish cruiser line, Cataluña further expands on the line’s playstyle as long-range cruisers with access to Burst Fire.
Hull
Like most cruisers, Cataluña's armor cannot be relied upon. Her 180 mm main belt will do little against most AP shells striking it broadside. Her bow and stern are 25 mm, which allows overmatch by the numerous 380 mm+ guns that are quite common on battleships within her tier spread. Her torpedo protection is only 7%, providing little defense against torpedoes. She boasts a respectable HP pool at 40,800. Despite this, captains should rely on active dodging, in order to mitigate damage.
Cataluña's maneuverability leaves much to be desired. While she can reach a high speed of 37 knots, her 10.3 second rudder shift and 850 m turning circle are both rather poor. She also has poor concealment, reaching only 11.5 km when fully specced. As such, captains should pick and choose their engagements carefully.
Armament
Cataluña carries nine 203 mm guns in three triple turrets. Her AP shells have good armor penetration and damage, while her HE shells have standard characteristics for their caliber. Captains should seek to use AP against broadside cruisers and the upper belts of battleships, as she can deal decent damage against them. She has a moderate reload of 12.5 seconds, which gives her average damage output overall. Her range is decent at 16.5 km, and combined with her flat ballistics, she is able to engage enemies comfortably at long distances. Cataluña also has acceptable gun handling, with her guns having a 25.7-second 180* turn time, as well as good firing angles. This allows her to present a smaller target when engaging enemies.
Cataluña also has the ability to use Burst Fire. She can fire two salvoes in quick succession, but it has a long reload of 31 seconds. Captains should use it at good opportunities, such as against broadside enemy ships, to secure a kill, or right before a ship leaves her gun range.
Cataluña carries decent torpedo armament. She has two quintuple torpedo tubes, one on each side. Her torpedoes have decent damage and speed, at 15,867 and 61 knots respectively, but a short range of 8 km. Their reload is an acceptable 106 seconds. Captains will find they are mostly useful at close range, mainly as a self-defense weapon.
Cataluña’s AA defenses are poor overall. She has a good max range of 6 km, but all of her auras have low DPS values. As a result, her best defense against enemy aircraft is sticking close to allied ships for their AA protection.
Cataluña carries standard Depth Charge Airstrikes for a Tier VIII cruiser. She has access to two charges, with a 7 km range and a 30-second reload. Each charge has one aircraft armed with two bombs that deal up to 4,200 damage each. Captains should make active use of this armament whenever there are signs of a submarine's presence nearby, such as fuel spills and sonar pings.
Consumables
Cataluña has access to a good amount of consumables. Alongside her standard Damage Control Party , she has the Repair Party consumable, which gives her extra survivability over most of her peers. She has a choice between Hydroacoustic Search and Defensive AA Fire in one slot, and a choice between Spotting Aircraft and Catapult Fighter in another. Captains should take the Hydroacoustic Search for extra utility, and the Spotting Aircraft to extend her maximum firing range and thus allow engaging enemies at longer distances.
Gameplay
Cataluña plays like a typical long-range kiting cruiser. Captains should use her gun range to keep enemy ships at a distance. Using both her AP and HE shells as needed will allow captains to deal efficient damage in battle. In addition, her Burst Fire allows her to easily punish enemy misplays, or deal lots of damage in a short amount of time. Captains should take note of her poor armor, rudder shift, and turning circle, and plan their actions accordingly.
Captains who prefer the playstyle of kiting cruisers will feel comfortable in Cataluña. Her tools give her many ways to influence a battle, while her Burst Fire additionally opens up new opportunities to capitalize on.Pros:
- Guns have flat ballistics, with good AP shell penetration and damage
- Access to Burst Fire, allowing her to quickly deal damage
- Fast reloading torpedoes
- High maximum speed
- Access to Repair Party
Cons:
- Poor armor
- Burst Fire has a long cooldown
- Short-ranged torpedoes
- Poor AA
- Poor rudder shift time and turning circle
- Poor concealment
