Maestrale — Italian Tier V destroyer.

The Maestrale class developed from the previous series of destroyers. The hull was enlarged, taking into account rational weight distribution and durability. The ships received new 120 mm guns. During the Spanish Civil War, the lead ship accompanied transports with the Italian forces. During World War II, Maestrale participated in patrol and escort missions, escorting convoys to Africa. On January 9, 1943, the ship was heavily damaged after hitting a mine.

Maestrale was first available during Update 0.11.2. on 17th Mar 2022.

Maestrale continues the defining characteristics of Italian destroyers — Semi-Armor Piercing (SAP) main battery shells with an unusually short main battery gun range, full-speed smokescreen, but poor concealment and agility. While most destroyers tend to focus on torpedo power, gunboating larger ships, or a hybrid of the two, Maestrale is a destroyer assassin. She excels at ambushing (or charging down) enemy destroyers, killing or crippling them before fading back into the shadows.

Armament

Maestrale's armament presents some interesting surprises for players familiar with other destroyer lines, but offer few differences compared to her Italian predecessors. Like IV Turbine, she carries four 120mm guns in two twin mounts, with a fast traverse and average reload. Although she only has two turrets, they have excellent firing angles. She can use all four guns while still presenting a smaller target for return fire. Her HE shells have a decent fire chance compared to other Tier V destroyers but her per-shell damage is lower at 1750, barely higher than Turbine’s.

Like other Italian destroyers, her SAP shells stand out. As with other SAP shells, they are less effective against sharply angled targets, but have increased armor penetration and damage compared to same-caliber HE shells and feature improved ricochet angles. Due to its consistent damage and increased penetration, Maestrale should use her SAP whenever possible. Although it can’t set fires or penetrate multiple layers of armor, it excels at chewing through destroyers and cruisers, and can reliably damage the thinner extremities and superstructure of battleships.

Another noticeable difference is her short range — Maestrale has the shortest main battery range among Tier V destroyers, and the shortest range in her entire matchmaking range besides Turbine. For a gun-focused destroyer, this can be both a blessing and a curse. It forces her to get close to enemy cruisers and battleships where she is more vulnerable to return fire, but it also makes it easier to go undetected. Once she hunts down and kills her destroyer target, the shorter gun range makes it less likely other ships will be close enough to keep her spotted.

Maestrale carries two triple torpedo launchers. Her stock torpedoes are identical to Turbine's with a slightly slower reload, and her upgraded torpedoes are a couple knots faster and deal more damage. Although her 8km range is tied for highest in tier, her 80 second reload is still one of the slowest. Both her torpedo options are also among the slowest and weakest in Tier V and her matchmaking range. Like the torpedoes on the Italian cruisers, they can be effective at area denial or when kiting, as their slow speed can catch an unsuspecting enemy ship off guard. But that same slow speed and corresponding long reaction time make them even less effective against agile ships. Her low torpedo damage also requires multiple hits to significantly damage larger targets, and even a full ‘broadside’ may not be enough to kill a healthy battleship. Unlike most destroyers, Maestrale's torpedoes are secondary damage sources.

Like other Tier V destroyers, Maestrale carries depth charges. She carries two sets of depth charges, which reload in 40 seconds each. Each set drops 10 charges that deal up to 3200 damage per charge.

Consumables

Maestrale's consumable suite is unusual for a destroyer. In addition to the standard Damage Control Party, she mounts the Exhaust Smoke Generator and Emergency Engine Power consumables. All tech tree Italian destroyers share the same consumable suite, varying only in the number of charges and consumable action times.

The Exhaust Smoke Generator conceals the ship even at full speed. It can be used offensively, allowing her to farm spotted enemies without being detected or smoke torpedo rush a battleship (the “Yolo Emilio” method), or defensively, to conceal herself and disengage if she gets focused.

Her Emergency Engine Power is unique among tech tree destroyers. Unlike the typical engine boost that provides a small boost over a long time, Emergency Engine Power provides a much larger boost in speed but with a shorter action time. It’s most useful for charging directly at an enemy, or running away quickly if she’s getting focused.

Maneuverability

Maestrale is fast for her tier, a trait shared by most of her successors. Her 38 knot base top speed is already one of the fastest among Tier V destroyers, and with the speed flag and Emergency Engine Power consumable active she can almost reach 50 knots. When it’s active, she is the fastest ship in her tier and one of the fastest in her matchmaking range, but the short duration and longer cooldown limits its impact compared to the normal Engine Boost consumable.

Maestrale also has a surprisingly fast rudder shift, 3.5 seconds on her stock hull and 2.5 seconds with the upgraded hull. Even compared to higher tier destroyers, she turns quickly. However, her 590m turning circle is high for a Tier V destroyer and barely average for her matchmaking range.

Survivability

Maestrale has one of the largest health pools for her tier, and even beats or equals some Tier VI and VII torpedo-focused destroyers. She has the health to outlast her opponent in destroyer vs. destroyer engagements and retain enough to still be effective in the next. Higher tier dedicated gunboats still have both a health and DPM advantage over her, so she will rely on team support or surprise in those fights.

Like most Tier V destroyers, Maestrale lacks anything resembling armor. She’s coated in 10mm plating from bow to stern, offering zero protection against HE and all cruiser and battleship caliber AP. She can bounce most destroyer AP when properly angled, but the large 150mm guns of some German destroyers can also overmatch her plating and deal damage regardless of angle. Larger caliber AP will often overpenetrate due to her thin armor and small size, but a well-placed HE salvo can cripple her or send her back to port. Her turrets are also rather vulnerable to breaking, with only 6mm plating on all sides.

Unlike Turbine, Maestrale shares the poor detection of the Italian destroyer line. Her 7.0km stock concealment is one of the worst at Tier V, and at best can only get down to 6.3km with Concealment Expert. All Tier IV destroyers easily outspot her, and even many Tier V, VI, and VII destroyers will too. She can use her smokescreen to conceal herself when necessary, and use islands to ambush enemies or block line of sight. But when uptiered she needs to be a bit more cautious.

Anti-aircraft

Maestrale has little defense against aircraft. She has no long range mounts, and therefore produces no flak. Her mid- and short-range mounts only reach 2.5 and 1.5km respectively, both the shortest in her tier, and deal very little damage. Her upgraded hull changes her 13.2mm mounts from single to double barrels and provides a bit more damage, but it still won’t protect her from planes. Maestrale relies on her smokescreen and allied AA cover to protect herself from carrier strikes.

Additionally, she only has four AA mounts, all centered around her forward superstructure. A single well-placed HE salvo can easily eliminate most or all of her already limited defenses.

Battle performance

Maestrale is a destroyer built around eliminating other destroyers. Her average concealment and high top speed allow her to ambush or chase down enemy destroyers, and her HE and SAP will quickly chew through its health. Once her flank is cleared of destroyers, she can hunt down destroyers on the other flank or stay to cap and farm cruisers and battleships. If she chooses to stay and farm, she should do so around the edge of her gun range. Focus on targets already distracted by her allies, to avoid unwanted attention. If they start to look at her, she can turn out and go dark quickly once no enemies are in her gun range.

Her short range can be an issue against cruisers and battleships, but her guns and torpedoes are still a threat and her smokescreen offers some protection by concealing her position. Her torpedoes may be usable, but her main guns are still her primary weapon. She may not be the most agile destroyer on the map, but makes up for it with her high speed and offensive capabilities. When played to her fullest potential, she may be a destroyer’s worst nightmare come true.

Pros:

  • Large HP pool
  • Decent main battery ballistics
  • SAP shells are highly effective against thinly armored targets
  • High SAP DPM
  • Long range torpedoes
  • Fast and agile
  • Has access to the Exhaust Smoke Generator and Emergency Engine Power consumables

Cons:

  • Does not have access to AP shells
  • Poor fire chance
  • Lower HE DPM
  • Short main battery range
  • Long torpedo reload
  • Low torpedo damage and slow speed
  • Very poor AA defenses
  • Cannot outrun her smokescreen deployment

Research

Researchable upgrades for Maestrale:

  1. Hull: Upgrade to Hull (B) for improved survivability and maneuverability. Research of this module unlocks progression to Aviere.
  2. Torpedoes: Upgrade to Si 270 G2 for torpedoes with more speed, range, and damage.
  3. Gun Fire Control System: Upgrade to SDT 5 mod.2 for an extra 10% range on the main battery.
Due to her limited gun range, unlocking the Gun Fire Control System is mandatory. Unlocking the hull upgrade should take priority for the extra health and improved AA defenses, but Maestrale needs all the range she can get.

Optimal Configuration

Maestrale is a destroyer assassin, best suited for ambushing and eliminating enemy destroyers and then going undetected. As such, players should focus on improving her main battery potential and her survivability.
