The Ship
Maya was one of four Takao-class heavy cruisers in service with the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War. Based on Atago, she trades a main battery turret for improved AA and a wide selection of consumables. The most notable are her Main Battery Reload Booster and Repair Party . She also has the choice between Defensive AA Fire or the same Hydroacoustic Search as carried by cruisers of Tier VIII and above.
Whilst Maya is a sister ship of Atago, she has a slower rudder shift, taking 10 seconds for the rudder to fully travel. With a turning circle of 780 meters, this can make avoiding incoming fire and moving in confined areas difficult. Although she may be sluggish when turning, Maya is fast in a straight line, with few Tier VII cruisers rivaling her 35.5 knot top speed. She can relocate quickly when needed or chase down isolated enemies, and easily keep pace with her team’s destroyers. With captain skills her concealment can be brought down to 11.2km which combined with her speed to allow Maya to reach advantageous firing positions or escape from dangerous positions.
Armor
Despite sharing Atago's overall armor scheme, Maya carries thinner armor compared to her Tier VIII sister. Her bow and stern are 16mm thick, which bounces most cruiser AP from tiers V to IX, but provides no protection against battleship AP or HE shells. Citadel armor varies from 102mm along the engine room spaces to 127mm around the magazines. There is also some extra protection provided by the presence of torpedo bulges along the length of her citadel, which can result in shells detonating before penetrating the main armor belt. Despite this, Maya's citadel presents a long and tempting target. As with any cruiser, showing too much broadside can result in taking serious amounts of damage. These flaws are partially offset by Maya's large health pool, exceeded only by French cruiser Toulon in tier. Maya's ability to absorb hits is further enhanced by her access to the Repair Party consumable, which allows her to stay fighting for an extended period. Her repair party is the same as Atago’s, queuing 50% of penetration damage and 33% of citadel damage received as well as all fire and flood damage. This repair party is active for 28 seconds allowing Maya to potentially repair 5488hp for each use of her repair party. With her 2 base charges Maya can potentially repair almost 11000 hp and this number can be increased up to 19,700 with combat signals and captain skills.
Armament
Maya's guns share the traits of other Japanese cruisers. Her guns are accurate, with destroyer dispersion, but they reload and turn slowly. The standard reload for Maya is a slow 16.5 seconds. She also has four turrets compared to the five carried by Myoko and Atago, which means a lower broadside weight and the lowest sustained main battery damage output of all Tier VII cruisers. She carries a Main Battery Reload Booster which cuts her reload time in half for 15 seconds, this provides an increase to her firepower allowing for one extra full reload during use. Finally, Maya's main battery range is a relatively short 15.3km.
Each HE round hits hard with excellent fire chance. With sustained firing Maya's shells are capable of setting an average of 4.9 fires per minute. While this is amongst the lowest in tier, with captain skills, combat signals and her Main Battery Reload Booster this rises to 8.7 fires per minute, rivaling even the faster firing 152mm gunned ships for short periods. Maya's AP rounds are merely adequate, and much worse than New Orleans. While they can deal citadel damage on broadside targets, they offer less utility against angled or heavily armored ships.
Maya carries four quadruple torpedo mounts. The torpedo launchers have Atago's improved firing angles, allowing one set on each broadside to fire 37 degrees from the bow and stern. However, firing both launchers from the same side still requires showing broadside. Maya’s torpedoes travel at a speed of 76 knots out to a range of 8km. This two kilometer reduction compared to Atago means that Maya is unable to effectively fire her torpedoes from stealth.
Anti-aircraft
Whilst Maya has improved anti-aircraft defenses with an extra pair of 127mm guns on each side, the majority of her AA batteries consist of 25mm cannon mounts. These weapons can only reach out to 2.5km, at which range enemy squadrons will already be on their attack run and as such present little deterrence to enemy carriers.
Anti-Submarine
Maya's ASW attack consists of 9 depth charges dropped from the stern in a line at 1 second intervals. Her depth charges cause some of the highest damage at Tier VII, with a direct hit causing 4,600 damage. This is higher than many destroyers at her tier. Because she carries depth charges, Maya must approach close to a submerged target in order to attack them, which can put her at risk of receiving damage from the submarine or any supporting enemies.
Battle performance
Maya presents a slightly modified version of the standard Japanese heavy cruiser playstyle. To obtain the best results, captains need to use effective positioning and ammunition selection, as well as hit point and consumable management to extend her time in battle and compensate for her low base damage output. A well timed Main Battery Reload Booster can allow Maya to score multiple citadel hits or set several fires in short order, crippling unwary cruisers and taxing battleship Damage Control Parties. Maya can use her improved Hydroacoustic Search consumable to detect enemy destroyers up to 5km away or provide advance warning of ships lurking around corners and behind islands. Despite the Hydroacoustic Search Maya is not well suited to close quarters brawls where her slow reload, bad turret traverse and mediocre maneuverability will hold her back from being effective.
Maya relies heavily on her HE shells at medium range for the majority of her damage, setting fires on battleships or directly damaging lighter ships. Where possible captains should be aware of the situation and potential targets. With some luck each HE volley can potentially set a fire, causing her to be a threat to even the largest enemy ships. Should the target extinguish any fires, captains should shift their fire to another target for a volley or two before returning to their original target with their Main Battery Reload Booster in order to hopefully set multiple fires in short order.
Maya's torpedoes can be devastating when they hit a target, but their shorter range and faster speed compared to other Japanese cruisers limits their usefulness as area denial weapons or for covering an escape whilst kiting away. Instead, they should be used against specific targets at shorter ranges. Their higher speed makes evading them a tricky task for larger vessels or those which are starting from a stationary position.
Pros:
- Access to Repair Party and Main Battery Reload Booster
- Guns have good accuracy with decent fire starting capabilities and damage
- Decent concealment and ship's speed
- Torpedoes have high damage
- Improved Hydroacoustic Search compared with most Tier VII Cruisers
Cons:
- Long reload on guns and torpedo tubes
- Slow turret traverse
- Mediocre maneuverability.
- Limited charges of heal and MBRB

Optimal Configuration
Upgrades
The recommended upgrades are:
- Slot 1: Main Armaments Modification 1
- Slot 2: Engine Room Protection or Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1
- Slot 3: Main Battery Modification 2 or Aiming Systems Modification 1
- Slot 4: Steering Gears Modification 1
There are two slots where captains might wish to consider alternative options. In slot 2 Engine Room Protection reduces the chances of becoming immobilized or Hydroacoustic Search Modification 1 (available for 17,000 coal from the armory) will increase the active time of her Hydroacoustic Search consumable.
In slot 3, Main Battery Modification 2 will help to boost the slow turret rotation times to a more usable level. Aiming Systems Modification 1 can also be useful although the accuracy of Maya's guns mean it is not a required upgrade and taking this upgrade means captains should take the Grease the Gears skill.
Commander Skills
A standard Japanese cruiser captain will generally fit in well with Maya, although torpedo skills will not provide the same benefit to Maya as other ships. At least one of Grease the Gears or Main Battery Modification 2 should be used.
If players are using a captain specifically for Maya then they should pick skills which will improve her consumables, main battery reload time and turret rotation times. Last Stand is also recommended to help prevent Maya losing her rudder control.
Consumables
Maya equips the following consumables:
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party
- Slot 2: Defensive AA Fire or Hydroacoustic Search
- Slot 3: Catapult Fighter
- Slot 4: Repair Party
- Slot 5: Main Battery Reload Booster
The Hydroacoustic Search consumable is recommended in slot 2 due to its increased utility and the short range of the majority of Maya's anti-aircraft guns.
Camouflage
As a premium ship, Maya comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.
