Performance
Warning. The data presented in the AA Defense sidebar section may be incorrect.
Tier X German aircraft carrier Max Immelmann specializes in providing quick support because of her fast plane speeds, but this comes at the cost of low alpha strikes. As such, she focuses on applying damage over time (DOT) effects with fires and floods. To compensate for her fragile planes and lack of a third squadron, she boasts a large hangar size, fast aircraft regeneration, and an option for long-range attacks that help mitigate anti-aircraft fire.
Torpedo Bombers:
Max Immelmann’s torpedo bombers are best used against non-maneuverable targets such as battleships and some cruisers. Each squadron consists of 12 aircraft with a strike of 4 planes launching 1 torpedo each. These torpedoes are slow, have low damage and flood chance, and a long arming time. To deal decent damage and increase the chance of causing a flood, it is necessary to catch enemy ships in a crossfire to ensure all 4 torpedoes hit. While the planes are fast, each plane’s individual health is low. To somewhat offset this, the torpedo bomber squadron comes with an in-flight Repair Party consumable that allows for increased survivability against anti-aircraft fire.
Because of their low damage output and lack of versatility, torpedo bombers should be used as a filler squadron when skip bomber reserves are running low. They are also useful against targets that have used the damage control party consumable to maximize potential flooding damage.
Skip Bombers:
Max Immelmann’s skip bombers are effective against all surface ship classes. The planes are extremely fast with a base maximum speed of 214 knots, which allows for quick strikes across the map. Each squadron consists of 12 planes with a strike of 4 planes dropping 1 High Explosive skip bomb each. These bombs can penetrate 68 mm plating and have a high fire chance. As skip bombs, they can be launched at a long distance from a target, allowing the planes to mitigate or even bypass a ship’s anti-aircraft defenses. They have a horizontal drop reticle, and are most effective attacking targets from the side.
Due to their high fire setting capabilities and large squad size, these skip bombers are best used to strike a target and then restrike those who have recently used the Damage Control Party consumable to light permanent fires. This is best achieved by lining up a strike, dropping the payload, and instantly turning around as soon as the drop animation happens. Players should then use their engine boost to exit anti-aircraft range and restrike once the target’s Damage Control Party is on cooldown. This not only allows for permanent fires and consistent damage, but also saves planes from anti-aircraft fire as skip bombs tend to loiter within the close-range anti-aircraft aura for long periods of time after a strike.
Ship:
Max Immelmann shares the same hull as Manfred von Richthofen, and is a well-armored aircraft carrier that travels at 32 knots with a 50 mm armored flight deck. While no armor-piercing shells can penetrate her flight deck, large-caliber high explosive shells that penetrate 50 mm can damage her from any range. Her hull features a 60 mm icebreaker, turtleback armor scheme, 13.6 km base concealment, and a thick armor belt (145-150 mm). While based on the Friedrich der Grosse hull, Max Immelmann is covered in standard 19 mm aircraft carrier plating.
Unlike many other carriers at Tier X, Max Immelmann has a weak anti-aircraft suite, with a maximum range of 5.2 km. While she has a high flak count of 9, her constant AA dps is low, with 234.5 long-range and 318.5 short-range damage. When being attacked by other carriers, it is important to use patrol fighters to defend against strikes.
Much like the other German aircraft carriers, Max Immelmann features a secondary battery with increased range and improved dispersion. However, her secondary battery firing angles are poor and require large amounts of broadside to bring all guns to bear. Investing in a secondary build is not recommended due to these bad firing angles and the weakness of aircraft carrier hulls at close range.
Tips:
- When using skip bombers against destroyers, it is best to drop using the second line on the skip bomber drop reticle. It is more accurate than dropping on the first line, but still reduces the time they have to dodge.
- When using skip bombers against targets with thick belt armor (like German and Soviet battleships), players should aim higher on the drop reticle to ensure bombs will land on superstructure/deck instead of the armored belt where they will shatter.
- As a special ship, Max Immelmann can use any German commander. Thus, using Gunther Lutjens is recommended as his talents provide 10% faster aircraft preparation time after 30 hits on enemy ships with any aircraft armament.
Pros:
- Decent hull protection for an Aircraft Carrier
- Fast planes
- Quick plane regeneration
- Large plane reserve
- Improved secondary armament
- Best concealment among Tier 10 aircraft carriers, tied with Manfred von Richthofen
Cons:
- 50 mm flight deck
- Only two plane types
- Low plane health
- Low torpedo damage
- Strikes must be perpendicular to be effective
- Poor AA defenses

Upgrades
The recommended upgrades for Max Immelmann are:
- Slot 1: Air Groups Modification 1
- Slot 2: Aircraft Engines Modification 1
- Slot 3: Secondary Battery Modification 1
- Slot 4: Skip Bomber Modification 2
- Slot 5: Flight Control Modification 1
- Slot 6: Flight Control Modification 2
Commander Skills
It is recommended to use Günther Lütjens for improved Improved Engine Boost.
- Note: Hidden Menace states that your planes reach safe altitude at 50% lower height which is not true because your planes are still vulnerable to flak, therefore the skill is bugged and not recommended.
Consumables
Max Immelmann equips the following consumables:
Aircraft Carrier:
- Slot 1: Damage Control Party unlimited
- Slot 2: CAP Fighter
All aircraft carrier consumables are automatically activated.
Torpedo Bombers:
- Slot 1: Engine Cooling
- Slot 2: Patrol Fighter
- Slot 3: In-flight Repair
Skip Bombers:
- Slot 1: Engine Cooling
- Slot 2: Patrol Fighter
Camouflage
As a premium ship, Max Immelmann comes with Default permanent camouflage and a set of permanent combat bonuses.
Signals
- Note: Carriers burn at 1% health per a second while all other ships burn at 0.3% a second. So even though Carriers burn for only 5 seconds for each fire, if caught off of DCP, multiple fires can be set over and over again making a carrier lose more health to fires than any surface ship within a short duration. Also, Tier X carriers have tier 6 fire reduction coefficient which makes them 30% more likely to be caught on fire than Tier X surface ships.
