Iwami — Japanese special premium Tier IX battleship.
One of the battleship projects developed in Japan in the mid-1930s. The ship was supposed to have four twin-gun main battery turrets. She had reinforced dual-purpose 100 mm main battery guns, improved anti-aircraft armament, and torpedo launchers.
Iwami was first released for sale on 8th of July 2022.

Performance
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.
Iwami is a premium Japanese Tier IX battleship armed with eight 410 mm guns. Her decent accuracy and good range complement the traditional sniper play style of Japanese battleships.
Armament:
Iwami carries eight 410 mm guns in four dual turrets. They have a range of 22.3 km, but does not have a spotter plane to increase the range further..
She fires the same shells found on Hizen, with decent alpha damage, good velocity, and good penetration. Her AP shells can overmatch 27mm armor, meaning her shells will be able to penetrate the bow/stern of Tier IX cruisers.. Her HE shells have 30% fire chance and 68 mm of penetration. Because of the overmatch on her 410 mm guns, good reload and accuracy, players should mainly fire AP at cruisers and capital ships while switching to HE for angled targets.
Iwami’s guns have good dispersion and a great sigma value at 2.1, meaning her shells will generally have tight groupings. However, due to having only 8 guns, her accuracy can be frustrating due to the low amount of shells per salvo. This can be offset by equipping Main Battery Modification 3 bringing the reload down to 24.6 seconds
Her turrets have a 180-degree turn time of 33.5 seconds. In addition, Iwami has good gun angles, and can fire all guns without showing too much side.
Iwami carries eight 610 mm torpedo tubes in two quad launchers. These are the same torpedoes found on Shimakaze, specifically the 20 km Type 93 torpedoes. They have average speed, bad detection, and 20,967 alpha damage. While the launch angles are not terrible, they are more suited for launching while kiting away from enemy threats. These torpedoes are best used to fire at key areas as area denial but also can be used in close quarter situations.
Survivabillity:
Iwami’s hull is visibly similar to Izumo and Hizen, but with a different armor scheme. Her bow and stern are 32 mm thick and she has a 50 mm armored deck. Her armor is sufficient at shattering most HE shells and protects her from AP shells smaller than 461 mm in caliber when sufficiently angled. Her armor belt is 356 mm thick and will bounce all AP shells when correctly angled. Her citadel is long and has the same ‘cheek’ (the part of the bow that meets the middle belt section) weakness as other high tier Japanese battleships. At closer ranges, high caliber AP shells can still citadel her through the ‘cheek’ even when she is otherwise angled.
Her surface concealment is decent at 12.9 km and she has a good HP pool of 80,700. Her 37% torpedo damage reduction is high for her tier. Iwami can play at medium ranges without much risk of dying quickly.
Maneuverability:
Iwami has average maneuverability characteristics, with a top speed of 28.2 knots. Her rudder shift time is good at 14.1 seconds, and her turning circle is slightly better than average at 880 m. Players can reliably dodge most torpedo threats as long as they are aware of the presence of a torpedo destroyer.
Secondaries:
Iwami features a secondary armament which consists of sixteen 100 mm guns. They are the same guns found on Harugumo which have 30 mm HE penetration and a fast rate of fire of 3 seconds. She also has nine 155 mm secondary guns. A secondary build is not recommended on Iwami due to weakness of her armor at close ranges and the lack of increased range and accuracy on the secondary guns.
Anti-Aircraft:
Iwami has poor long- and short-range AA DPS (203 and 283 respectively) with no mid-range AA aura. While she has eight flak clouds, her low DPS means she can’t stop an aircraft carrier strike by herself. Grouping up with allied ships to overlap Anti-Aircraft auras is recommended in games with carriers.
Battle Performance:
Iwami fills the classic sniper battleship role, positioning around 14 km away from key areas and enemy capital ships. Captains should provide crossfire onto enemy battleships and cruisers by positioning themselves across from friendly battleships or by holding angles towards island positions. Her torpedoes provide another tool for area denial, and should be launched towards cap circles and choke points throughout the battle. Iwami’s poor close range armor scheme and average speed means she is not a brawler.Pros:
- Good HP pool
- Decent torpedo protection
- Good reload time
- Good dispersion
- Good firing angles
- Access to 20 km torpedoes
- Decent concealment
Cons:
- Citadel "cheek" is easy to hit
- Lower gun count
- Torpedoes have high detection
- Weak AA defenses
