Renown — British Tier VI battleship.
Having returned to the post of First Sea Lord, Admiral Fisher lobbied for the construction of two battlecruisers—Repulse and Renown. HMS Renown was put afloat in 1916 and entered service the same year. During World War II, the ship participated in the hunt for German raiders Graf Spee and Bismarck. She was also involved in the Norwegian campaign; guarded Maltese convoys; covered the landing of Allied forces in North Africa; and was used for diplomatic purposes, transporting Winston Churchill. In 1944, she took part in the final stage of the war as part of the Eastern Fleet.

Player Opinion
Performance
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.
Renown is the Tier VI ship of the British battlecruiser tech tree, and further continues the emphasis on speed and firepower over survivability and armor.
Armament:
Renown carries six 381 mm guns in three twin turrets, with a range of 17.4 km. Her AP shells have good alpha damage, and a significantly shortened fuse time of just 0.015 seconds, which means fewer overpenetrations when shooting cruisers. Her AP can overmatch the 26 mm plating found on most mid-tier battleships, although the shorter fuse time will result in fewer citadels. Her HE shells have a 34% fire chance, and 64 mm of penetration.
Renown’s guns are accurate, with good horizontal and vertical dispersion values. However, having only six guns can cause her accuracy to be frustrating at times. While she shares the same guns as her premium counterpart Repulse, her sigma value is lower at 1.8. Her guns have a fast reload time of 23 seconds.
Her turrets have a 180-degree turn time of 45 seconds. Careful positioning and map awareness are necessary to ensure all guns remain in the fight.
Renown carries eight single-launch torpedo launchers, with four per side. These torpedoes have a 95-second reload time, 6 km range, and a maximum damage of 10,000. Her torpedo tubes are fixed but have the torpedo turning mechanic. Immediately after launch, they will perform an S-turn to reach the selected heading, before arming and proceeding in a straight line. This allows her fixed launchers to fire at much wider angles, but the arming time and minimum arming distance are longer as a result. In addition, their “traverse speed” is half as fast as those of “real” launchers, which can cause issues at close range or during drive-bys.
Survivabillity:
Renown’s hull is visibility similar to that of Repulse, with slight differences. Her bow and stern are thinly armored with 16 mm plating, which means every battleship and even some cruisers can overmatch them, and they’re very vulnerable to HE shells. She has a thicker 29 mm deck and 38 mm side plating, but does not have Repulse's 152 mm main armor belt.
Her concealment is good, reaching as low as 11.5 km. She has a good HP pool of 55,200 but a bad 13% torpedo damage reduction. As a result, Renown should play at medium ranges.
Maneuverability:
Renown is a fast battleship, with a top speed of 31.4 knots that can be further increased to 33.8 knots with her Engine Boost consumable. Her rudder shift time of 15.5 seconds is average, but her turning radius of 840 m is quite poor. Due to her good speed, Renown can change positions easily when needed.
Anti-Aircraft:
Renown has low long- and medium-range AA DPS for a battleship—52.5 and 108.5 respectively. Her short-range AA DPS is quite high at 479.5, but planes will spend the least amount of time in it. While she does have the Defensive AA Fire consumable, her AA DPS is still lackluster. She also only has one flak cloud, so she is almost entirely reliant on her continuous AA damage to shoot down planes. This is definitely not enough to stop an aircraft carrier from striking, so grouping with allied ships to overlap anti-aircraft auras is recommended in games with carriers.
Battle Performance:
Renown is a mid-range battleship that likes to play on flanks and punish broadside enemies, much like the other tech tree British battlecruisers. Her good speed allows her to switch positions for better shots, and react to the situation. Her low concealment and large health pool allow her to play closer to enemies, and provide crossfire on enemy battleships and cruisers. Because of her fast reloading and accurate guns, players should mainly fire AP, while using HE on angled targets. Her torpedoes are best used for deterring suicide rushes.
While she has a good health pool, her 16 mm bow and stern means she is susceptible to battleship AP overmatch through the front, and must avoid drawing too much attention to herself. Her poor turning radius and weak torpedo damage protection mean players should not seek close quarter engagements too early, when destroyers have not been dealt with.Pros:
- Good health pool
- Accurate guns with good dispersion
- Short AP fuse time
- Torpedoes have the torpedo turning mechanic
- Strong short-range AA DPS
- Fast
- Excellent concealment
- Access to Defensive AA Fire consumable
- Access to Engine Boost consumable
Cons:
- Weak, easily overmatched bow and stern plating
- Poor torpedo damage protection
- Slow turret traverse
- Average main battery range
- Overall bad AA DPS, with just one flak cloud
- Poor turning radius
