Sun Yat-Sen — Pan-Asian special premium Tier IX battleship.
The project of a Sovetsky Soyuz-class battleship incorporated considerable upgrades in the 1950s. The main battery mounts have been replaced by 457 mm twin-gun mounts—one of the options considered for the project during the development of Project 24. The medium-caliber guns and long-range AA artillery have been replaced by 152 mm dual-purpose mounts, while the small-caliber AA artillery is represented by ZIF-75 and ZIF-31B gun mounts. Such a ship could well have been handed over to China as part of Soviet assistance in their navy development program.
Sun Yat-Sen was first released for sale on 27 January 2023.

Performance

Sun Yat-Sen is similar in many ways to her Soviet counterpart Sovetsky Soyuz. She contrasts herself with a smaller amount of larger caliber guns and better horizontal dispersion, among other differences.
Hull
Sun Yat-Sen shares Sovetsky Soyuz’s hull, and sports some of the best survivability of all Tier IX battleships. Her 60 mm deck can shatter most cruiser HE shells, combined with a small superstructure that makes it difficult for them to damage her. Her 32 mm bow is additionally protected by an internal armor strip of 220 mm, so even battleships that overmatch her bow may struggle to citadel her. Her HP pool of 80,900 is among the highest in tier. While Sun Yat-Sen has a well protected main belt of 375 mm, her citadel sits well above the waterline.
Sun Yat-Sen pays for her survivability with her maneuverability. Her 950 m turning circle is among the worst of all Tier IX battleships. To make matters worse, her 28 knot top speed is also one of the slowest. In addition, her concealment is also quite poor, reaching only 13.5 km when fully built. Combined with her above-waterline citadel and overall large size, captains should take care in their maneuvering, and plan their actions well in advance.
Armament
Sun Yat-Sen’s defining feature is her six 457 mm main battery guns, with her shells having similar characteristics to Kremlin. Their fast 26 second reload allows her to consistently deal damage, while their caliber makes her a significant threat to ships with 30 mm plating, common on most cruisers within her tier spread. Unlike Sovetsky Soyuz, Sun Yat-Sen does not have the Russian battleship dispersion curve, but instead uses the battlecruiser dispersion curve combined with an above-average sigma of 1.9. This means her salvos will be accurate across all ranges. Her gun handling is comfortable, with great firing angles and fast turret traverse. With only six guns, however, there will be times her gunnery can feel frustrating. And with a short firing range of 19.2 km, Sun Yat-Sen will have to get close to engage enemy ships.
Sun Yat-Sen’s secondary armament is underwhelming. While her six twin 152 mm turrets boast similar accuracy to Georgia, they lack any improved range and have a mediocre reload. Combined with the overall low shell volume, they should not be relied upon aside from the occasional lucky fire or kill.
Sun Yat-Sen’s AA defenses are poor. She lacks short range mounts, and her flak count and damage from her long range mounts are weak. Her midrange has slightly more reach than most ships at 4 km, but its damage output is also low. While she has access to Defensive AA Fire , this is not enough to deter enemy aviation strikes. Captains should seek allied assistance for dealing with aircraft.
Sun Yat-Sen carries standard Depth Charge Airstrikes for a Tier IX battleship. She has two charges with a 10 km range and 30 second reload. Each charge has one aircraft armed with two bombs dealing up to 4,200 damage each.
Consumables
Sun Yat-Sen has a fairly standard consumable suite, with a typical Damage Control Party and Repair Party found on most battleships. She also has access to Defensive AA Fire in a separate slot, which can give her a boost to her anti-aircraft. However, given her poor AA defenses, in practice its impact will be little to none.
Gameplay
Sun Yat-Sen is best played at midrange. She can absorb a majority of incoming damage thanks to her well-protected hull, while simultaneously dealing damage thanks to her gun reload and accuracy. The latter also assists her in remaining a threat at the extremities of her range. She can also excel at close range, but with her exposed citadel, poor maneuverability and lack of Sovetsky Soyuz’s Fast Damage Control Team consumable, captains should be careful when engaging at such distances.
Sun Yat-Sen provides a different flavor compared to Sovetsky Soyuz. While the latter leans more towards close-to-midrange combat thanks to her consumables and unique dispersion, Sun Yat-Sen is reasonably effective at any range, and is more forgiving for captains.Pros:
- Strong armor and large HP pool
- Large caliber guns with above-average accuracy and reload
- Good shell ballistics
- Great firing angles and fast turret traverse
- Secondaries have improved accuracy
- Decent rudder shift for a battleship
- Access to Defensive AA Fire
Cons:
- Large exposed citadel
- Low gun count, leading to occasionally frustrating salvos
- Short firing range
- Low secondary gun count
- Weak AA
- On the slower end of Tier IX battleships
- Large turning circle
- Mediocre concealment
