Van Speijk — Dutch special premium Tier IX cruiser.
In 1938, against the backdrop of international tensions, the Dutch Ministry of Defense decided to reinforce its Navy. The projects that appeared in 1939 were, in most respects, similar to the project of German warship Scharnhorst. For economic reasons, it was decided to reduce the size of the new ship. The government was inclined to pursue a project to build a 16,000-ton cruiser capable of running at 33 knots and carrying a main battery of 240 or 280 mm guns. In the end, however, to ensure sufficient armor protection, they had to make do with a smaller caliber of 203 mm. If the project had been pursued further, the ship could well have received reinforced AA defenses by the end of World War II.
Van Speijk was first released for sale on 19 July 2023, and is available in the Research Bureau for 46,500.

Performance
Refer to the in-game Port screens for more useful data.
Van Speijk is a Tier IX premium Dutch cruiser. Compared to the tech-tree cruisers, she presents a more gun-focused playstyle, while retaining their typical traits of great concealment, the signature Airstrike armament, and good survivability.
Hull
Similar to her fellow Dutch cruisers,Van Speijk has a well-protected hull. Her 200 mm main belt and 30 mm turtleback gives her ample citadel protection against most AP shells. Her 27 mm side plating, combined with a 50 mm upper belt, provides good protection while she is angled. Her 30 mm deck protects her from being overmatched by 406 mm guns or smaller. Additionally, she has a 40 mm icebreaker protecting her 25 mm bow, making overmatching it difficult. Unlike the high tier tech-tree Dutch cruisers, Van Speijk does not suffer from battleship fires and floods, lessening the threat of damage over time. Her HP pool is average for her tier, at 47,300.
Van Speijk’s maneuverability is on the slower end. She is one of the slowest Tier IX cruisers at 32.5 knots. Her rudder shift is also somewhat poor at 11.1 seconds, although her turning circle is excellent at 730 m. In contrast, her concealment is one of the best at her tier. Reaching as low as 9.8 km, she can freely maneuver on the battlefield, taking up advantageous positions and catching opponents off-guard.
Armament
Van Speijk is equipped with nine of the same 203 mm guns found on Haarlem. Compared to Haarlem, these guns have improved characteristics. They feature a faster reload (12.5 vs 15 seconds), allowing her to dish out more damage. Furthermore, they use the standard cruiser dispersion formula rather than the battlecruiser one. Combined with her comfortable ballistics, she will land more shells on her targets compared to her tech-tree Dutch peers. Both her AP and HE shells have standard characteristics, so captains are encouraged to use both types to maximize their damage. Van Speijk's guns have a short range of 15.6 km, meaning captains must take care in their positioning in order to have an impact in the match (though she has the option of mounting Gun Fire Control System Modification 2 should captains feel that they need more range).
Van Speijk's also carries a unique variant of the Airstrike armament. It has a staggering 15 km range, allowing her to damage enemy ships from afar. This comes at the cost of only one charge, as well as a substantially longer reload of 130 s. Their characteristics are otherwise identical to Johan de Witt, with 6,100 damage per bomb, 35% fire chance, and 36 mm of pen. Due to its traits, the Airstrike will serve as a more auxiliary armament. Captains should ideally use it on the superstructures of large, slow ships, particularly those that have already extinguished fires with their Damage Control Party . Due to their drop pattern, the armament is easier to land against bow- or stern-in targets.
Van Speijk's AA defenses are outstanding. Her mid- and short-range DPS values are among the best in her tier, at 400 and 286 damage respectively. Her long range DPS is fairly average, sitting at 101 damage, but it has a good range of 6 km. She produces 5 flak clouds, which is standard. Adding to this is her Defensive AA Fire consumable, further boosting her AA. All this makes her a considerable threat to enemy carriers, as well as a valuable escort to defend allies from aviation attacks.
Consumables
Alongside her Damage Control Party , Van Speijk also carries fast-reloading Repair Party . This allows her to heal back HP more frequently, thus prolonging her survivability. In addition, she has standard versions of Hydroacoustic Search and Defensive AA Fire in separate slots.
Gameplay
Van Speijk should use her combination of amazing concealment, strong armor, and short Repair Party cooldown to take up advantageous positions in battle. Her decent reload and good accuracy compared to the other Dutch cruisers means she can deal more damage against enemy ships with her main battery. Her airstrike, while not as powerful as her tech-tree counterparts, extends her influence in battle due to its great range. When necessary, she can use her concealment to reposition or disengage from fights.
Van Speijk presents the Dutch cruiser playstyle with a shift in focus from the airstrikes to the main battery, giving her more consistent damage output. Captains who enjoyed the tech-tree line but wished for a more reliable main armament will feel right at home in her.Pros:
- Good overall survivability thanks to her durable armor and fast cooldown Repair Party
- Compared to tech-tree Dutch cruisers, has standard cruiser accuracy, fire duration, and a faster reload
- Airstrike has long range
- Great AA, aided by the Defensive AA Fire consumable
- Superb concealment
- Access to Hydroacoustic Search and Defensive AA Fire in separate slots
Cons:
- Short main battery range
- Airstrike has only one charge with a very long reload
- No torpedo armament
- Slow speed and rudder shift
